Patterns (格局): The Core Code of Chart Structure

In the world of BaZi fortune analysis, Patterns are the key framework for decoding a person's life blueprint. They are not about a single auspicious star or ominous spirit, but rather about examining the energy contained in the birth month (the month pillar) to identify the most powerful "dominant force" (the Useful God) in the entire chart. This defines the core type of the BaZi and the life theme. Patterns reveal a person's innate potential, talents, and the possible levels and boundaries they may reach in life. They clarify which of the Ten Gods is most influential in the chart and, from there, deduce various manifestations in real life. For example, an "Executive Pattern" often relates to order, responsibility, social status, and public affairs, while a "Talent Pattern" is more associated with personal artistry, spiritual creativity, and the enjoyment of life.

How to Establish a Pattern: The Month Pillar is Key

Within the orthodox Ziping framework of fortune analysis, there is a rigorous logic for establishing Patterns, and the foundation is always the "month pillar outline."

  1. Prioritize the Month Pillar: The month pillar (month branch) is the total source of energy in the BaZi, much like how a season determines the climate's tone. Therefore, the first step in analyzing a Pattern is to examine the "Heavenly Stems" (Hidden Stems) stored within the month branch.
  2. Revealed Stem as Evidence: If a Heavenly Stem hidden in the month branch also appears among the Heavenly Stems of the year, month, or hour pillars, then this revealed stem represents the energy of the month pillar. It becomes the "Useful God," and the Pattern is determined based on it. For example, if the Day Master is Jia (Yang Wood) and is born in the month of You (Rooster), which contains Xin (Yin Metal, the Executive), and Xin also appears in the Heavenly Stems, this is a case of "Heaven Revealed, Earth Hidden," with significant power. The chart can then be designated as an "Executive Pattern."
  3. Primary Qi Priority: If multiple Hidden Stems from the month branch are revealed in the Heavenly Stems, priority is given to the one with the strongest "primary qi" to set the Pattern.
  4. Eight Patterns as the Guideline: Typically, we use eight of the Ten Gods—Executive, Warlord, Mentor, Mystic, Earner, Venturer, Talent, and Maverick—to establish basic Patterns. These are collectively called the "Eight Regular Patterns." If the month pillar contains a Peer or Rival, it is not directly classified under the Eight Patterns but is discussed under special names like "Jian Lu Pattern" or "Yue Ren Pattern."

The Four Major Categories of Patterns

There are many names for BaZi Patterns. According to ancient texts like the "Three Lives General Meeting" (三命通会), there are nearly two hundred types, each with different and quite strict conditions for formation. However, from a macro-structural perspective, they can be broadly divided into the following four categories:

  • Regular Patterns (Eight Regular Patterns): The charts of the vast majority of people fall into this category. They center on the month pillar, analyzing the balance between the Day Master and the Ten Gods like Wealth, Authority, Seal, and Talent. The core idea is "support and suppress"—if the Day Master is too strong, it needs to be restrained or drained; if too weak, it needs to be nourished or supported.
  • Follow Patterns: These occur when the power of one of the Five Elements is extremely strong in the chart, or the Day Master is extremely weak, causing the overall energy to be heavily skewed. The Day Master essentially "abandons the self" to follow that strongest force. They can be divided into "Follow Strength Pattern" (extremely strong Day Master) and "Follow Weakness Pattern" (extremely weak Day Master).
  • Transformation Patterns: These occur when the Day Stem combines with an adjacent Heavenly Stem, and under specific conditions, both transform into another of the Five Elements. The entire chart is then interpreted based on this "transformed spirit."
  • Miscellaneous Patterns (External Patterns): These are special Patterns not entirely based on the month pillar but formed through unique combinations of the Four Pillars' Stems and Branches, Fate Stars, or Nayin. Famous examples include the "External Eighteen Patterns." This category is complex, with types like "Remote Combination Pattern" (Zi Yao Si Lu), "Hidden Clash Pattern" (Fei Tian Lu Ma), and "Special Prosperity Patterns" (Qu Zhi, Yan Shang, etc.). Their formation conditions are usually stricter than those of the Eight Regular Patterns.

Analysis of the Ten Basic Patterns

The following ten Patterns are the most fundamental, commonly used, and core types in the Ziping system.

Pattern NameMonth Pillar Ten GodCore Traits and Life Themes
Executive PatternExecutiveUpright, self-disciplined, responsible. Those with a successful pattern are natural managers, easily gaining formal positions and social respect.
Warlord PatternWarlordAuthoritative, decisive, bold. Those with a successful pattern (often needing Talent to control or Mystic to transform) can turn pressure into power, often possessing leadership qualities.
Mentor PatternMentorBenevolent, intelligent, scholarly. Those with a successful pattern are natural scholars or advisors, receiving much support from benefactors and leading a stable life.
Mystic PatternMysticPerceptive, profound, unconventional. Those with a successful pattern often have extraordinary talent in art, metaphysics, religion, or special skills.
Earner PatternEarnerDiligent, practical, trustworthy. Those with a successful pattern are skilled financiers and doers, accumulating stable wealth and family happiness through hard work.
Venturer PatternVenturerGenerous, bold, good at business. Those with a successful pattern are natural merchants, adept at seizing opportunities for substantial returns.
Talent PatternTalentGentle, optimistic, tasteful. Those with a successful pattern are artists or connoisseurs of life, talented and blessed with lasting good fortune.
Maverick PatternMaverickIntelligent, rebellious, expressive. Those with a successful pattern (often needing a Mystic to pair or Earner to guide) can turn talent into achievement, often being geniuses or innovators.
Jian Lu PatternPeer (Official position)Independent, self-reliant, strong-willed. Those with a successful pattern can build a career from scratch but need Wealth and Authority to achieve wealth and status.
Yue Ren PatternRival (Emperor position)Strong energy, fierce temperament. This pattern must have strong Warlord or Executive to control it. Those with a successful pattern often hold real power, especially in military fields.

The Success or Failure of a Pattern and Its Level

Determining the Pattern is just the starting point; judging whether a Pattern is "successful" or "failed," "pure and noble" or "turbid and mixed," is the key to inferring a person's life level.

  • Successful vs. Failed Pattern: A Pattern is "successful" if its core Useful God is strong and has an "Assistant God" to protect or support it. Conversely, it is "failed" if the Useful God is restrained or damaged, or severely disturbed by an Unfavorable God. For example, an Executive Pattern is successful if it has an Earner to nourish it and a Mentor to protect it. It fails if a Maverick directly restrains the Executive.
  • High vs. Low Level: Even among successful Patterns, there are different levels. A "pure" Pattern indicates a high level of wealth and status. A "turbid" Pattern, while still achieving something, involves a more difficult journey. "Pure" means the Useful God, Favorable God, and Assistant God are strong and undisturbed. "Turbid" means various forces mix and conflict, creating an unclear situation.

Classical Text

"Yuan Hai Zi Ping" (渊海子平)

子平一法,专以日干为主,而取提纲所用之物为令。次及年月时支以表其端。凡格用月令提纲,勿于旁求年日时为格。今人多不知其法于此,百法百失。

Modern Interpretation: The Ziping method centers on the Day Stem and selects the usable element from the month pillar outline as the commander (the basis for setting the Pattern). Then, it considers the branches of the year, day, and hour to reveal the Pattern's signs. Whenever establishing a Pattern, one must rely on the month pillar outline and should not seek the Pattern from the year, day, or hour pillars. Many people today do not understand this fundamental rule, leading to frequent errors in their analyses.
