Yuan Chen (元辰): The "Great Depletion" Star in BaZi
Core Influence
Yuan Chen, also called the "Great Depletion" (大耗) in traditional Chinese metaphysics, is a star with predominantly negative energy. Its malefic influence manifests primarily as "internal and external turmoil" (内忧外患), associated with the imagery of "wind disaster" (风煞) — symbolizing unstable life foundations and fluctuating fortunes. Individuals with Yuan Chen in their BaZi chart often face family discord and obstacles in personal development caused by problematic external relationships.
This star is also linked to traits such as restlessness, poor financial management, and a tendency to become entangled in disputes. In terms of health, it may indicate accidental injuries or impulsive, irrational behavior. When Yuan Chen appears in the Day Pillar or Hour Pillar, it can particularly affect marital harmony and the health and fortune of one's spouse. Overall, Yuan Chen tends to create difficulties in family and financial matters. If the Luck Cycle (大运) or Annual Cycle (流年) also moves into unfavorable positions, it may trigger financial hardship, irritability, and health issues. Fortunately, if Yuan Chen combines with auspicious stars like the Heavenly Noble (天乙贵人), its negative effects can be significantly mitigated.
How to Locate Yuan Chen
To determine if Yuan Chen is present in your chart, use the Earthly Branch of your Year Pillar as the reference point and compare it with the Earthly Branches of the other three pillars (Month, Day, Hour). The calculation also depends on the Yin-Yang nature of the individual. The specific rules are as follows:
| Gender & Year Branch | Corresponding Yuan Chen Earthly Branch |
|---|---|
| Yang Male / Yin Female | Zi sees Wei, Chou sees Shen, Yin sees You, Mao sees Xu, Chen sees Hai, Si sees Zi, Wu sees Chou, Wei sees Yin, Shen sees Mao, You sees Chen, Xu sees Si, Hai sees Wu. |
| Yin Male / Yang Female | Zi sees Si, Chou sees Wu, Yin sees Wei, Mao sees Shen, Chen sees You, Si sees Xu, Wu sees Hai, Wei sees Zi, Shen sees Chou, You sees Yin, Xu sees Mao, Hai sees Chen. |
Note: A Yang Male has a Year Heavenly Stem that is Yang (Jia, Bing, Wu, Geng, Ren); a Yin Female has a Year Heavenly Stem that is Yin (Yi, Ding, Ji, Xin, Gui). Yin Male and Yang Female are the opposite.
Origins and Classical References
The concept of Yuan Chen is rooted in the ancient philosophy of "Yin-Yang opposition and overcoming." The classical text San Ming Tong Hui (三命通会) records that Yuan Chen arises from the "clash" (冲) between Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches in a person's BaZi, creating obstruction. Ancient scholars believed that individuals born in Yang years (for males) or Yin years (for females) — or the reverse — naturally have more turbulent life paths, and Yuan Chen is the concrete manifestation of this clashing contradiction.
Classical texts describe Yuan Chen's influence as "bending without being able to stretch, straight but not smooth" (屈则于事无所申,直而不遂), meaning those affected tend to feel oppressed and encounter many obstacles in their endeavors, making it difficult to realize their ambitions.
San Ming Tong Hui further explains that as one of the malefic stars, when Yuan Chen is activated by the Luck Cycle or Annual Cycle, it primarily predicts household instability, financial depletion, and interpersonal difficulties. If Yuan Chen combines with auspicious stars, the calamity can be reduced. However, if it encounters Punishment (刑), Clash (冲), or is in a harmful position, its negative effects will be amplified.
