What is date selection? The wisdom of picking the right day
Date selection (auspicious day picking, picking a day) is an age-old method of choosing a suitable date for major events like weddings, moving, or store openings, based on the traditional almanac's daily do's and don'ts and the clashes of the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches. It doesn't foretell a fixed fate; rather, it helps you go with the flow of time and circumstance, scheduling important matters on more fitting days.
How to do date selection · HOW TO
Pick an auspicious day in four steps
一
Choose what you want to do
Marriage, moving, opening a business, travel, groundbreaking, praying for blessings, signing contracts — first decide which big event you're planning. Picking a date starts with whether that activity is favorable on the day.
二
Set a date range
Mark a stretch of days that works for you (defaults to this month through next month). The more specific the range, the better the auspicious days will fit your actual plans.
三
Check auspicious days on the calendar
ShunShi checks the Chinese almanac day by day and lists the days suited to your activity. A solid gold circle marks a “top auspicious day” where the day's guardian deity is auspicious — well worth prioritizing.
四
Ask the date selection assistant
Not sure? Just ask the AI assistant on the right — which day is best, which zodiac sign to avoid, what other good days work for a different activity — explained in plain language.

Date selection FAQ
Date selection (also called auspicious day picking, or simply picking a day) is the method of choosing a suitable date for major events like weddings, moving, or store openings, based on the traditional almanac's daily do's and don'ts and the clashes of the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches. ShunShi's AI date selection adds a conversational assistant on top: you choose what you want to do and a date range, and it checks the authentic old almanac day by day to list auspicious days — you can even just ask "which day is best, and what should I avoid," with no need to cross-check the almanac one day at a time yourself.
The Chinese almanac is organized by "day" — you turn to a given date and see what's favorable or unfavorable that day. Date selection is organized by "event" — you first decide what you're planning, then pick the good days suited to it from a date range. Both draw on the same authentic old almanac data; only the entry point differs: go to the almanac to see one day's details, use date selection to pick a date.
In date selection, first choose "Wedding," pick a date range and search, and look first at the solid gold-circle "top auspicious days" (where the day's guardian deity is favorable); then avoid days that clash with the couple's zodiac signs as well as inauspicious directions. When unsure, just ask the AI assistant whether a given day is good for marriage and which zodiac sign it clashes with — it'll explain in plain language. For an important date, it's best to also weigh both partners' BaZi together.
In date selection, choose "Moving" and set a date range, and the system will list days the almanac marks favorable for "relocating / moving in." When picking, prioritize top auspicious days and avoid days that clash with your own zodiac sign; for those who want to be thorough about moving in, you can also factor in the homeowner's BaZi. To check whether a specific day is favorable, just ask the date-selection assistant on the right.
Not necessarily. Basic date selection only looks at the day's do's and don'ts and clashes in the Chinese almanac, which is plenty for everyday matters. For major events like a wedding or a grand opening, if you want extra assurance you can also factor in the person's BaZi to read favorable and unfavorable elements — ShunShi lets you bring the chart owner's BaZi in for a personalized reference, but this is an advanced option and won't stop you from using general date selection to shortlist good days first.
Yes, they're the same. In Hong Kong and Taiwan people write it as "date selection" and casually say "picking a day" or "choosing a day" — all referring to picking an auspicious date for major events like weddings, moving in, or store openings. ShunShi's tool is labeled "date selection" in its Traditional Chinese interface, and works exactly like traditional almanac-based auspicious day picking.
The favorable/unfavorable notes for date selection come from a general almanac and are for reference only when picking a date. For major events like weddings or store openings, please weigh them together with your natal BaZi and your own circumstances.
