Punishment (Xing): Earthly Branch Conflicts and Friction
What is Punishment (Xing)?
"Punishment" (相刑) describes a type of friction or injury relationship among the Earthly Branches. The main types are:
- Three Punishments (三刑):
- Yin-Si-Shen (寅巳申) — Punishment of Ingratitude (无恩之刑)
- Chou-Wei-Xu (丑戌未) — Punishment of Power (恃势之刑)
- Two Punishments: Zi-Mao (子卯) — Punishment of Rudeness (无礼之刑)
- Self-Punishment: Chen, Wu, You, Hai (辰午酉亥) — each branch punishing itself
Unlike a Clash (冲), which is dramatic and obvious, Punishment is more subtle — it represents hidden wear, entanglement, and recurring setbacks that slowly drain energy.
Punishment in Relationship Charts
When two people's Earthly Branches form a Punishment relationship, their interactions often feel awkward, draining, and full of unspoken tension. They may need extra patience and understanding to navigate the friction. The severity of Punishment depends on the overall chart context.
