What is Punishment (Xing)?

"Punishment" (相刑) describes a type of friction or injury relationship among the Earthly Branches. The main types are:

• Three Punishments (三刑):
  • Yin-Si-Shen (寅巳申) — Punishment of Ingratitude (无恩之刑)
  • Chou-Wei-Xu (丑戌未) — Punishment of Power (恃势之刑)
• Two Punishments: Zi-Mao (子卯) — Punishment of Rudeness (无礼之刑)
• Self-Punishment: Chen, Wu, You, Hai (辰午酉亥) — each branch punishing itself
