Chou Yao Si Lu (丑遥巳禄) — The Hidden Noble Pattern
In the intricate world of BaZi (八字) special patterns, there exists a subtle and powerful configuration known as Chou Yao Si Lu (丑遥巳禄), or "Chou Remotely Summons the Si Noble." This pattern is the counterpart to the more well-known "Zi Yao Si Lu" (子遥巳禄) and is exclusively reserved for individuals born on a Xin Chou (辛丑) or Gui Chou (癸丑) day. Its essence lies in the concepts of "remote action" (遥) and "breaking open" (破). By leveraging the collective strength of multiple Chou (Ox) branches in the chart, and without any visible Officer (官) star, the pattern secretly acts upon the Si (Snake) branch, drawing out its hidden official salary and noble energy to serve the Day Master. This process establishes a noble and prosperous destiny.
As the classical text Xi Ji Pian (喜忌篇) states: "For Xin and Gui days with many Chou branches, do not favor the Officer star. If the year or hour pillars contain Zi or Si, the result is empty fame and hollow profit."
Structural Requirements of the Pattern
The core of this pattern is a Xin Chou or Gui Chou Day Pillar. The Earthly Branches of the Four Pillars must contain at least one or two additional Chou branches. Crucially, the entire chart must be devoid of any direct Officer stars (Bing, Wu, or Si). Only through the combined power of multiple Chou branches can the Si palace be remotely broken open, drawing forth its hidden official salary.
The specific structural requirements are as follows:
- Day Pillar Mandate: The Day Pillar must be either Xin Chou (辛丑) or Gui Chou (癸丑).
- Foundation of Chou Earth: In addition to the Chou in the Day Branch, the Year, Month, or Hour Branches should ideally contain one or two more Chou branches. The more Chou branches present, the stronger the "remote summoning" force, and the higher the likelihood of the pattern forming successfully.
- Officer Star Must Be Hidden: The Heavenly Stems must never contain Bing (丙) or Wu (戊). The Earthly Branches must never contain Si (巳). The appearance of these Officer star representatives is called "filling in" (填实), which immediately destroys the pattern. This leads to a life of hard work with only superficial results.
- Avoid Clashes and Combinations:
- The Earthly Branches should not contain Wei (未). A Chou-Wei Clash (丑未冲) will destabilize the Chou branches that are the foundation of the pattern.
- The Earthly Branches should not contain Zi (子). A Zi-Chou Combination (子丑合) will cause the Chou branches to "become greedy for the combination and forget the remote action" (贪合忘遥), losing their driving force.
- The Finishing Touch: The presence of Shen (申) or You (酉) in the Four Pillars is a key indicator of success. Shen or You can form a Six Combination (巳申合) or a Triad (巳酉丑会) with the remotely summoned Si fire, thereby "locking in" the noble energy and making it stable and serviceable for the native.
Characteristics of the Pattern and Its Reflection on Life
Individuals who enter this pattern are often of a calm, steady, and profound nature, possessing extraordinary patience and perseverance. They excel at accumulating capital in silence, ultimately winning status and success through long-term planning and sustained effort. Chou Earth is the treasury of Metal and also damp earth, symbolizing tolerance and capacity. Therefore, these people usually do not show their edge but can stand out at critical moments.
If the pattern is pure and undamaged, it signifies a combination of nobility and wealth. The person is reliable and easily gains trust. Their life path tends towards "late success," with a more circuitous and obscure journey to achievement. If the pattern is damaged—for example, by the Officer star being filled in—the person may fall into a predicament of "empty fame and hollow profit," appearing successful but lacking real power or substance. If there are many clashes or hindrances, the person may become conservative and dull, with few opportunities and much labor for little gain.
Favorable and Unfavorable Gods for the Pattern
-
Favorable Gods (喜神/用神):
- Strong Day Master by Season: Those born on a Xin Chou day are best born in autumn (Metal season); those born on a Gui Chou day are best born in winter (Water season). A strong Day Master is better able to harness the secretly obtained Officer star.
- Metal and Water Support: Strong Metal and Water elements in the chart can support the Day Master and nourish the Chou branches (the foundation of the pattern, as Chou is the treasury of Metal), making the pattern more robust.
- Shen or You to Lock the Noble: The presence of Shen or You in the pillars is the soul of this pattern's success or failure. They can combine with the remotely summoned Si fire, preventing the noble energy from escaping. This is the finishing touch.
-
Unfavorable Gods (忌神):
- Appearance of the Officer Star: Seeing Bing, Wu, or Si in the chart or in the Luck Cycles (大运) or Annual Cycles (流年) is the primary taboo that breaks the pattern. It means efforts are likely to turn to dust, with little substantial gain.
- Interference from Zi or Wei: The appearance of Zi (which combines with Chou) or Wei (which clashes with Chou) in the chart or in the Luck/Annual Cycles will destroy the pattern, leading to missed opportunities and half the results for double the effort.
- Fire and Earth Luck Cycles: The Luck Cycles should not enter periods of strong Fire or Earth. Fire represents the Officer and Kill stars, which will directly "fill in" and break the pattern. Earth represents the Seal/Indirect Seal (印/偏印) stars; an excess of Earth can restrict Gui Water or bury Xin Metal, which is unhelpful to the pattern and adds obstacles.
Classical Text Collection
From the San Ming Tong Hui (三命通会)
The Xi Ji Pian says: "For Xin and Gui days with many Chou branches, do not favor the Officer star. If the year or hour pillars contain Zi or Si, the result is empty fame and hollow profit." This pattern applies only to Xin Chou and Gui Chou days. Xin's Officer is Bing, and Gui's Officer is Wu. The salary/root (禄) of Bing and Wu is in Si. Only Chou can break open Si. When the pillars contain many Chou branches, the salary of Bing and Wu emerges, and Xin and Gui can remotely combine to obtain the Officer star. It is taboo to see Zi (which combines with Chou) or Wei (which clashes with Chou), or to have the Si character filled in. If these taboos are violated, the result is merely empty fame and hollow profit. The same logic applies to Luck Cycles and Annual Cycles.
A Xin Chou day is best born in the autumn month, and a Gui Chou day is best born in the winter month. The pillars should have abundant Metal and Water to form this pattern. Seeing Shen or You again is excellent, as they can combine with the Si character, preventing the noble energy from escaping. For Xin days, the absence of Bing, Ding, Si, and Wu makes the pattern pure; for Gui days, the absence of Wu, Ji, Si, and Wu makes it pure. If there are no further clashes or hindrances, the person will be honest and simple, enjoying both nobility and wealth. Even if the pattern is slightly damaged, the person will still be wealthy. If born in Chen, Xu, Chou, or Wei months, it should be treated as a Miscellaneous Talent/Officer pattern. If born in Mao, Chen, Shen, You, or Hai hours, it is also not treated as this pattern. For example, if a Xin day is born in a Bing Yin, Bing Wu, or Bing Xu month, it is treated as an Officer pattern. If born in a Jia Yin month (or hour), because Wood can produce Fire, it can be treated as a Wealth/Officer pattern. For Gui days, if there is much Earth in the chart, it is treated as an Officer/Kill pattern; if the hour pillar is Gui Hai, it is treated as a Salute Salary pattern; if born in a Metal-strong month, it is treated as a Seal pattern; if born in a Fire-strong month, it is treated as a Wealth pattern. If born in a Jia Yin month, the Maverick (伤官) is not a problem; it is favorable to walk through Luck Cycles where the Officer star is strong and the Day Master is strong, often leading to nobility. This pattern is similar to the Flying Horse Salary patterns for Xin Hai and Gui Hai days. The classic says: "Xin and Gui days that combine with the salary will be wealthy and prosperous throughout life."
A poem says: "Xin and Gui days with many Chou branches, called the remote Si combined Officer star. Do not say this pattern dislikes a strong Officer star; who would believe that when the Officer comes, it actually succeeds?" Another says: "Xin Chou and Gui Chou, these two day stems; Chou can break Si because Si hides the Officer. Many Chou characters are considered excellent; it is not favorable to have the Zi character in the middle." Another says: "Xin and Gui without an Officer, relying on many Chou to summon from afar, attracting the salary of Bing and Wu from Si. The branches favor seeing You and Shen to combine; those who enter the pattern should have abundant noble salary. Xin people fear the encounter with Bing, Ding, Si, and Wu; Gui people dislike Wu, Ji, the Horse (Wu), and the Snake (Si). If Zi comes to combine with Chou, the mind is truly lazy; if the pattern is light, fortune also dissipates." Another poem says: "What is the principle of the Chou Yao Si pattern? Xin and Gui day stems with many Chou characters gathered. If the branches encounter Shen or You, the Officer star is obtained; if the Rat (Zi) or Snake (Si) appear, fortune is consumed. Xin people fear the encounter with Bing and Ding; Gui days find it hard to coexist with Wu and Ji. If the aforementioned taboo characters do not appear in the eight characters, the person can also stand alone and achieve high success in the imperial exams."
Modern Interpretation: The Xi Ji Pian points out that for people born on Xin or Gui days, if their BaZi chart has many Chou branches, they should not see the Officer star again. If the Year or Hour Pillar also encounters Zi or Si, it mostly indicates empty fame and hollow profit. This pattern is exclusive to Xin Chou and Gui Chou days. Xin Metal's formal Officer is Bing Fire, and Gui Water's formal Officer is Wu Earth. The salary/root of Bing Fire and Wu Earth is in the Si palace. Only Chou Earth can secretly "break open" the Si palace. When the chart has many Chou branches, they can activate the salary of Bing and Wu within Si, allowing the Xin or Gui Day Master to remotely combine with the Officer star. It is taboo to have Zi Water combine with Chou, or Wei Earth clash with Chou, and it is also taboo to have the Si character appear directly (filling in). If these taboos are violated, the result is only superficial success. The same logic applies to Luck Cycles and Annual Cycles.
A Xin Chou day is best born in autumn, and a Gui Chou day is best born in winter. The chart should have abundant Metal and Water energy to form this pattern. If Shen or You appear, they can combine with the remotely summoned Si, preventing the noble energy from escaping, which is excellent. For a Xin day, the absence of Bing, Ding, Si, and Wu in the chart makes the pattern pure; for a Gui day, the absence of Wu, Ji, Si, and Wu makes it pure. If there are no further clashes or hindrances, the native will be a simple and honest person, enjoying both nobility and wealth. Even if the pattern has minor flaws, the person will still live a prosperous life. If born in Chen, Xu, Chou, or Wei months, it should be analyzed using the Miscellaneous Talent/Officer pattern. If born in Mao, Chen, Shen, You, or Hai hours, it is also not treated as this pattern. For example, if a Xin day is born in a Bing Yin, Bing Wu, or Bing Xu month, it is directly treated as an Officer pattern. If born in a Jia Yin month (or hour), because Wood can produce Fire, it can be treated as a Wealth/Officer pattern. For Gui days, if the chart has much Earth, it is treated as an Officer/Kill pattern; if the hour pillar is Gui Hai, it is treated as a Salute Salary pattern; if born in a Metal-strong month, it is treated as a Seal pattern; if born in a Fire-strong month, it is treated as a Wealth pattern. If born in a Jia Yin month, the Maverick (伤官) is not a problem; it is favorable to walk through Luck Cycles where the Officer star is strong and the Day Master is strong, which often leads to nobility. This pattern is similar in principle to the Flying Horse Salary patterns for Xin Hai and Gui Hai days. An ancient classic says: "Those born on Xin or Gui days who enter the Combined Salary pattern will be wealthy and prosperous throughout life."
