Fortune Aloft (飞天禄马)
Fortune Aloft (飞天禄马) is one of the most elusive and powerful hidden Patterns in BaZi. It represents the potential for extraordinary achievement, where an individual creates their own fortune and authority from seemingly nothing. The core principle is a powerful, concentrated force within the Earthly Branches (usually Water) that "strikes" a distant palace to activate and claim hidden Wealth and Executive (正官) stars that are not visible in the chart. When this Pattern is successfully formed, it signifies a destiny of remarkable social ascent and affluence, built not on inheritance but on sheer force of will and opportunity creation.
How to Identify the Pattern
Identification is extremely strict. The Pattern only applies to individuals born on one of four specific days: Geng Zi (庚子), Ren Zi (壬子), Xin Hai (辛亥), or Gui Hai (癸亥). The chart must feature a powerful surge of Water energy that, through the Earthly Branches, remotely triggers and secretly acquires the Executive and Wealth stars.
The two main forms are:
-
Geng Zi (庚子) and Ren Zi (壬子) Days: Striking Wu (午) for Nobility
- Day Pillar: Must be Geng Zi or Ren Zi.
- Striking Branches: The Earthly Branches must contain multiple Zi (子) Rat branches (at least two or three), forming a potent force to strike and activate the opposing Wu (午) Horse (Fire).
- Combining Branches: The chart favors the presence of Yin (寅) Tiger, Xu (戌) Dog, or Wei (未) Goat. These can combine with the struck Wu (午) Horse (e.g., Wu-Wei combine, Yin-Wu-Xu combine) to "lock in" the hidden Executive and Wealth.
- Taboos: The Four Pillars must not reveal any visible Executive stars (Ding (丁), Ji (己)), Wealth stars (Ding (丁)), the filled position of Wu (午) Horse, or the entangling branch Chou (丑) Ox.
-
Xin Hai (辛亥) and Gui Hai (癸亥) Days: Striking Si (巳) for Nobility
- Day Pillar: Must be Xin Hai or Gui Hai.
- Striking Branches: The Earthly Branches must contain multiple Hai (亥) Pig branches (at least two or three), forming a powerful force to strike and activate the opposing Si (巳) Snake (Fire).
- Combining Branches: The chart favors the presence of Shen (申) Monkey, You (酉) Rooster, or Chou (丑) Ox. These can combine with the struck Si (巳) Snake (e.g., Si-Shen combine, Si-You-Chou combine) to secure the hidden fortune.
- Taboos: The Four Pillars must not reveal any visible Executive stars (Bing (丙), Wu (戊)), Wealth stars (Bing (丙)), the filled position of Si (巳) Snake, or the entangling branch Yin (寅) Tiger.
The Meaning of the Pattern
Those with a Fortune Aloft Pattern are natural pioneers. Their charts lack ready-made "Fortune and Steed" (Wealth and Executive), meaning they do not rely on conventional paths or family background. Their greatest asset is a singular, concentrated force within themselves (the abundance of Zi or Hai). Through the intense act of "striking," they forge new possibilities and seize opportunities that did not previously exist.
However, if there is only "striking" without "combining," it results in fruitless effort—the ancients called such people "drifters" or "wandering artisans": talented but unable to achieve true greatness. Only when the combining branches firmly lock in the struck Wealth and Executive can opportunities be transformed into lasting personal achievement.
Favorable and Unfavorable Conditions
-
Favorable Conditions:
- Strong Day Master (身强): This is the foundation. The Day Master must have Seasonal Advantage or be in a position of strength (typically born in winter), with enough power to "activate" the remote strike. A weak Day Master cannot initiate the strike.
- Abundant Striking Branches: The more Zi (子) Rat or Hai (亥) Pig branches present (ideally three or more), the more concentrated and powerful the force, enabling the opening of the opposing palace's treasure.
- Presence of Combining Branches: The chart must include branches that can merge with the struck Wu (午) Horse or Si (巳) Snake. This is like casting a wide net and then being able to gather it in, ensuring the fortune is secured.
- Favorable Luck Cycles (大运): Cycles favoring the Talent (食神) (Wood) allow for the release of abundant energy and expression of skill. Cycles favoring Metal and Water further strengthen the self. Both indicate periods where wealth and status can be realized.
-
Unfavorable Conditions:
- Exposed Executive or Warlord (七殺): This is the primary breaker of the Pattern. If the Heavenly Stems or Earthly Branches openly reveal the Executive or Warlord, the individual becomes content with visible authority, losing the motivation and mechanism for remote activation.
- Filled Executive Vault: If the Earthly Branches openly display the struck character (Wu (午) or Si (巳)), this is called "filling the position." The vacancy is filled, the remote strike is nullified, and the Pattern collapses.
- Entangled Combining Branches: If the striking branches (Zi or Hai) are combined with neighboring branches (e.g., Zi-Chou combine, Hai-Yin combine), they become distracted and lose their striking power.
- Special Taboos: Geng Zi (庚子) Day dislikes excessive Water, which can lead to "Metal submerged, Water adrift"—a scenario of poverty or lack of direction. Ren Zi (壬子) Day should not reveal the Ding (丁) Fire Wealth star, as it may lead to issues of indulgence or scandal.
Classical Source Text
From San Ming Tong Hui (《三命通会》)
The "Favorable and Unfavorable" chapter states: "If one encounters a month governed by the Maverick (傷官), what appears ominous may not truly be so." This refers to a configuration known as the Reversed Fortune Aloft, which is averse to exposed Executive stars and dislikes entanglements. This Pattern is limited to four days: Geng Zi, Ren Zi, Xin Hai, and Gui Hai, born in the pure Water months of winter, and only when the Four Pillars lack visible Wealth and Executive stars. Additionally, the Month, Hour, or Year Branch must match the Day Branch to provide enough force for the strike. Exposed Executive stars are taboo, as they prevent the Fortune from "flying aloft"; entangled combining branches also hinder the strike. Ideally, one of the Four Pillars contains a branch that can combine with the struck Fortune and Steed, ensuring the noble Qi does not dissipate. The Pattern favors the presence of the Maverick, Talent (食神), and luck cycles that strengthen the Day Master.
Interpretation: The classical text meticulously outlines the logic. For a Geng Zi Day, the Geng (庚) Metal Day Master uses Ding (丁) Fire as its Executive. Being born in a Zi (子) Month (which is the Maverick position for Metal) seems inauspicious. However, if the chart has many Zi branches, they can strike the hidden Ding Fire within the Wu (午) Horse, granting the Executive star. The presence of a combining branch like Wei (未), Yin (寅), or Xu (戌) is crucial to secure it. Entanglements (like Zi-Chou combine), exposed stars (Ding, Bing), or a filled Wu position will break or weaken the Pattern. The same principles apply, with corresponding elements, for Ren Zi, Xin Hai, and Gui Hai days.
The text also offers nuanced warnings: A Geng Zi day with too much Water can lead to a scattered, ungrounded life. A Ren Zi day that encounters the Ding Fire Wealth star might face temptations. Ultimately, the Pattern requires both the forceful strike and the securing combination to manifest its full, noble potential. Without the combination, the individual remains a talented wanderer.
