Three Nobles (三奇真贵) — The Perfect Cycle of Success
In the vast landscape of BaZi patterns, few are as revered as the "Three Nobles" (三奇真贵). This configuration is considered a hallmark of a smooth, prosperous life—one where wealth, authority, and wisdom reinforce each other in an unbroken loop. The pattern requires the simultaneous presence of three key stars: the Earner (正财), the Executive (正官), and the Mentor (正印).
The brilliance of this pattern lies in its self-sustaining logic. The Executive, representing power and social standing, is nourished by the Earner, which provides material resources. In turn, the Executive generates the Mentor, which symbolizes knowledge, credentials, and protection. The Mentor then supports the Day Master, granting wisdom and vitality. This creates a closed loop of mutual generation—a "success engine" that propels the native forward. As an ancient text states: "If one encounters the True Three Nobles and the True Wealth-Horse, their fame will spread across the world."
How to Identify This Pattern
The core criterion is that the Earner, Executive, and Mentor must all appear in the Four Pillars (either in the Heavenly Stems or Earthly Branches), and each must have a solid root in the地支, without severe damage.
Key points for verification:
- Complete Set: The Heavenly Stems or Hidden Stems must contain all three: Earner, Executive, and Mentor. (In some classical interpretations, the Talent (食神) may substitute for the Mentor, forming a "Wealth-Official-Talent" variant.)
- Strong Roots: The Day Master, as well as the Earner, Executive, and Mentor, should each have a supporting root in the Earthly Branches (such as a禄, 旺, or 库). This ensures balanced power—none should be excessively strong or weak.
- Orderly Sequence: The ideal arrangement is for the three stars to appear in a sequential generating order across the Year, Month, and Hour Pillars. For example, the Mentor in the Year, the Executive in the Month, and the Earner in the Hour. When the three are hidden within the Earthly Branches (called "Inner Three Nobles"), it is considered more stable and powerful than when they are exposed in the Heavenly Stems ("Outer Three Nobles").
- Same Decade Cycle: If the Stems and Branches forming the Three Nobles all fall within the same 10-day cycle of the Sexagenary Cycle (e.g., all within the Jia-Zi to Gui-You decade), this creates the purest form—the "True Wealth-Horse"—and elevates the pattern to its highest level.
Deeper Meaning of the Pattern
Individuals with this pattern are typically intelligent, upright, and value learning and moral integrity. Because the structure is balanced, their life path tends to be smooth, without dramatic ups and downs. The Executive provides the drive and ability to pursue career and social status. The Earner offers solid material support and resources. The Mentor brings wisdom, knowledge, and social reputation. This virtuous cycle allows the native to achieve balanced and comprehensive development in wealth, career, learning, and fame—a classic sign of a blessed and noble life.
However, every pattern has its shadow. The very balance that makes this pattern so favorable can sometimes become a limitation. For instance, a strong Earner may restrain the Mentor, leading to a person who is broadly knowledgeable but may lack the deep, obsessive focus of a specialist with a more imbalanced chart.
Favorable and Unfavorable Conditions
Favorable Conditions:
- Flowing Qi: The ideal state is a smooth, unobstructed flow of energy between the Earner, Executive, Mentor, and Day Master. The Stems and Branches should generate each other in sequence without blockage.
- Strong Self Luck: The most beneficial Luck Cycles are those that strengthen the Day Master. A strong self can better bear and manage the wealth and authority indicated by the pattern, unlocking its full potential.
- Prosperous God Periods: Luck Cycles that enhance the Earner, Executive, or Mentor—as long as they don't disrupt the original balance—can also boost achievements in the corresponding areas of life.
Unfavorable Conditions:
- Punishments, Clashes, and Harms: If the root of any of the three noble stars is severely damaged by Punishment (刑), Clash (冲), Break (破), or Harm (害), it is like a broken gear in a precision machine. This disrupts the flow of the entire pattern and diminishes its blessings.
- Combinations That Break the Chain: If one of the noble stars is "kidnapped" by a Combination (合) with another Stem or Branch (e.g., the Executive is combined by a Peer), it may become preoccupied and forget its duty to generate the next star, breaking the cycle.
- Attack by Aggressive Gods: The chart should not contain strong, aggressive stars like the Maverick (伤官), which attacks the Executive; the Rival (劫财), which fights for the Earner; or the Mystic (偏印), which can steal the Talent. If these directly attack any of the three nobles, the pattern is broken.
Classical Text and Interpretation
From the "Three Lives Comprehensive Guide" (三命通会):
The classic says: "If one encounters the True Three Nobles and the True Wealth-Horse, their fame will spread across the world. If the Day encounters a prosperous Wealth-Horse, success will come in one stroke." For example, a Jia Wood person born in You, Chou, or Wei month, or a Yi Wood person born in Si or Shen month, if the chart also has Ren or Gui Water, or Hai or Zi, and the Earner, Executive, and Mentor are all present, this is the noble Three Nobles. It fears the Maverick, Warlord, Rival, Punishments, Clashes, Breaks, and Harms. Luck prefers periods that strengthen the Earner, Executive, Mentor, or the Day Master. Those who encounter this are intelligent, studious, child prodigies, top scholars, have integrity and morality. The Three Nobles are divided into Outer (exposed in Heavenly Stems) and Inner (hidden in Earthly Branches).
The Outer Nobles indicate achieving wealth and nobility through hard work, often with a sense of unrest, because the Heavenly Stems are always in motion. If the Month Branch's Earner and Executive are weak, or if the Luck Cycle enters a declining phase, it becomes a life of poverty. For example, the official Zuo Jian, with a chart of Ji-Mao, Gui-You, Jia-Wu, Xin-Wei, has the Three Nobles in the Heavenly Stems, but the Day Master is weak while the Earner and Executive are strong, and the Mentor is weak, so it may not lead to great nobility. If it is the Inner Three Nobles, where the Earthly Branches secretly combine to form the True Wealth and True Horse, supported by the Heavenly Stems, without Clashes or Ke, and the Month Branch connects to the generating energy of the Earner and Executive—like a Xin Metal person born in Si month, where both the Executive and Mentor have their 禄, and the Earner is also strong, and the Day Master is robust—then the nobility can reach the highest rank. The classic says: "If a man encounters the Three Nobles in a phase of birth and prosperity, he will surely attain the highest rank."
For example, Grand Secretary Zhang Juzheng: Yi-You, Xin-Si, Xin-You, Xin-Mao. The Month Branch has the Executive and Mentor at their 禄. The Day Master sits on its own 禄 and is strong. The Year's Yi Earner returns to its 禄 in the Hour's Mao. Thus, the Day Master, Earner, and Executive all sit on their 禄. The fourth month has Heavenly Virtue in Xin. Xin and Yi exchange their 禄. Therefore, he became a Grand Secretary in his youth, had six sons, and his parents and siblings were all complete. His son and younger brother passed the imperial exams in the same year. One son became a Hanlin academician. Among the cabinet ministers of the previous dynasty, none had such favor. Another example is Minister Tan Lun: Geng-Chen, Jia-Shen, Ding-Wei, Bing-Wu. The Earner, Executive, and Mentor are all present. The Month Branch Ding-Wei is a 八专, and the 禄 returns in the Hour. The body is strong and obtains the Three Nobles. He achieved high nobility through military merit, reaching the first rank.
It is also said: If a Jia Wood person is born in mid-autumn, and the Stems and Branches have Ren, Gui, Wu, and Ji, and the Day Master is strong, this also indicates great nobility. If the Stems and Branches also have Shen and Geng, causing a mix of Executive and Warlord, and the chart has Yi to combine with Geng, or a strong Bing to control it, it can still be used, but it will never be pure. If born in late summer or late winter, one may have talent and virtue but find it hard to achieve fame. If a Jia Wood person is born in Chou month, Chou contains Xin (Jia's Executive), Ji (Jia's Earner), and Gui (Jia's Mentor). If the Month Branch's Three Nobles have energy, or form a局, and the Day Master is strong, with a little help from the Mentor, this is called "Mentor-carrying gathered nobility," which is best. The rest can be deduced by analogy.
It is also said: The complete set of Earner, Executive, and Talent is also considered the Three Nobles. The reason for taking the Talent is that Jia's Talent is Bing, Bing can generate Ji (Jia's Earner), and combine with Xin (Jia's Executive). It is best if the Month Branch and the Day/Hour Branches lead to prosperity. Those who encounter this are noble and wealthy; even if less so, they will have abundant wealth. However, when the Three Nobles meet the Talent, only the Mystic is considered unfavorable.
It is also said: The Three Nobles should appear in sequence, and it is most noble if they are all within the same 10-day cycle. For example, Jia-Zi Day seeing Ji-Si and Xin-Wei; Yi-Chou Day seeing Wu-Yin and Geng-Chen; Bing-Yin Day seeing Xin-Mao and Gui-Si; Ding-Wei Day seeing Geng-Xu and Ren-Zi; Wu-Xu Day seeing Ji-Hai and Gui-Mao; Ji-Wei Day seeing Ren-Shen and Jia-Xu; Geng-Chen Day seeing Yi-You and Ding-Hai; Xin-Si Day seeing Yi-Wei and Bing-Shen; Ren-Wu Day seeing Ding-Wei and Ji-You; Gui-Mao Day seeing Bing-Chen and Wu-Wu. These are the Three Nobles in sequence, encountered within one 10-day cycle, forming the True Wealth-Horse. With the Mentor supporting the body, the person will become a Duke or Marquis.
It is also said: Jia meets You, Zi, Si; Yi meets Shen, Wu, Hai; Bing meets Zi, Mao, Shen; Ding likes Hai, You, Yin; Wu sees Mao, Hai, Wu; Ji meets Yin, Zi, Si; Geng meets Wu and Yin; Xin meets Si and Mao; Ren likes Wu and You; Gui sees Si and Shen. These are the Earthly Three Nobles, also called Inner Three Nobles. The Earner and Mentor should not harm each other, so the Executive and Mentor meet the partial Earner. Those who encounter this, without Breaks or Clashes, and with birth and prosperity, will surely be heroes in the world, pass the imperial exams with high honors, and become high ministers.
It is also said: The nobility of the Three Nobles requires careful examination of the Earner, Executive, and Mentor—what supports them, what damages them. If there is even one taboo, the noble pattern is damaged. One can judge fortune and misfortune by category: If the Earner is robbed, and the Luck Cycle or Annual Cycle again brings a Peer or Rival, then this year will bring harm to the wife or loss of wealth, or legal trouble due to wife or servants. If the Executive is openly or secretly damaged, and the Luck or Annual Cycle again brings a damaging god, then this year will bring demotion or loss of position. If the Mentor is damaged or broken, it will deplete one's foundation and ancestral blessings; if the Luck Cycle enters a phase of death or extinction, and again encounters a destructive god, a great disaster will surely come.
In general, when reading a chart, one must examine which god is the Useful God and which is the helper. If the Executive is the Useful God, it fears death, defeat, and destruction. If the Useful God is injured, but the helper has a rescue, although the misfortune is severe, the person will not die. If the helper is also blocked or overcome, and the Day Master is weak, then death is certain.
A poem says: "The Earner, Executive, and Mentor are called the Three Nobles. Civil heroes and military generals show their might. With a loyal heart and great principles, the whole family will be blessed with glory."
Another poem: "The Earner, Executive, and Mentor are called the Three Nobles. It is rare to have all three complete. In youth, one will top the imperial exams. With great achievements, one will live a long life." And: "When the Mentor's 禄 flies to ride the Horse, wealth and position are both suitable. In prosperity, it is the foundation of one's original merit. It is the highest pattern, the first wonder of glory."
Modern Interpretation: The classical texts emphasize that a true Three Nobles pattern is extremely rare and powerful, bringing fame and success. Its establishment has strict conditions and many taboos. It is divided into Outer (exposed in Heavenly Stems) and Inner (hidden in Earthly Branches), with the latter being more stable. The success of the pattern hinges on the balance and flow of energy between the Earner, Executive, Mentor, and Day Master, and on the absence of severe Punishments, Clashes, or Harms. The texts cite historical figures like Grand Secretary Zhang Juzheng as examples, showing that a perfect pattern can lead to the highest ranks of power and complete blessings. They also detail the misfortunes that occur when the pattern is damaged, emphasizing the need for a holistic analysis of support and injury in the chart.
