Dual Virtue Support (二德扶身): The Guardian Stars of Destiny
In BaZi fortune analysis, "Dual Virtue Support" is a highly revered auspicious pattern. It refers to the simultaneous presence of two special Fate Stars in the birth chart: the Heavenly Virtue Noble (天德贵人) and the Monthly Virtue Noble (月德贵人). These are not part of the Ten Gods system but originate from celestial influences, symbolizing the purest virtuous and refined energy between heaven and earth. Their core function is to support the Day Master and dissolve calamities, acting like an innate protective force within the destiny. An ancient text states: "It is the convergence of sun and moon's radiance; how could any darkness or evil dare to dwell within?" Hence, it is regarded as the ultimate symbol of goodness and auspiciousness.
How to Find Them
To locate the Heavenly Virtue Noble and Monthly Virtue Noble, use the Earthly Branch of your birth month as the reference point. If any Heavenly Stem or Earthly Branch in the Year, Month, Day, or Hour Pillar matches the corresponding relationship, it indicates the presence of that star.
The specific correspondences are as follows:

Core Significance of the Pattern
Individuals with the Dual Virtue Support pattern are typically kind-hearted, compassionate, and possess a strong moral sense. The most prominent feature of this pattern is "turning danger into safety." Even when facing hardships and dangers in life, they often manage to turn crises into blessings. As the saying goes, "With one virtue supporting, all dangers are resolved." They seem to carry an invisible shield, making it difficult for petty people or negative influences to harm them. Their life path is thus relatively stable, with fewer extreme ups and downs.
If the Heavenly Virtue Noble or Monthly Virtue Noble happens to be a Favorable God (Useful God) in the chart — for example, coinciding with the Earner, Executive, Mentor, or Talent — then the blessings are doubled. Not only does the person possess high moral character, but they are also more likely to achieve tangible wealth, status, and success. It is important to note that the primary function of the Dual Virtue is "rescue and support." It enhances the safety net of the destiny, lowering the risk of major disasters, but it does not infinitely raise the ceiling of achievement. If the original chart combination is not of a high level, the Dual Virtue can help avoid great calamities and reduce severity, but it may not directly create a life of immense wealth and power.
Favorable and Unfavorable Conditions
-
Favorable Conditions:
- Convergence of Auspicious Stars: It is most favorable when the Dual Virtue appears alongside other auspicious stars like the Earner, Executive, Mentor, Talent, Fortune God, or Heavenly Noble. The synergy of these stars significantly elevates the overall quality and blessings of the chart.
- Located in the Day Pillar: If the Dual Virtue appears on the stem or branch of the Day Pillar, it is called "Dual Virtue at the Day." Its supportive power is most direct and personal, indicating a life with strong protection and fewer dangers.
- Forming Combinations: If the stem-branch of the Dual Virtue forms a Triple Combination or Six Combination with other branches in the chart, its noble energy becomes more stable, and the blessings are more enduring.
-
Unfavorable Conditions:
- Suffering Clashes or Punishments: Like all Fate Stars, the stem-branch of the Dual Virtue is most vulnerable to being Clashed, Punished, Harmed, or Broken by other pillars or by the Luck Cycle and Annual Cycle. If the noble star is attacked, it cannot protect itself, and its ability to resolve and support is severely weakened or nullified.
- Falling into Void: If the stem-branch of the Dual Virtue happens to be in a Void position, the noble energy becomes empty and insubstantial. Its power to turn misfortune into good fortune is greatly diminished.
- Controlled or Combined by Unfavorable God: If the Dual Virtue is strongly controlled or bound by an Unfavorable God in the chart, its ability to function is also severely limited.
Classical Texts
"San Ming Tong Hui" (Comprehensive Insights into the Three Destinies)
The Heavenly Virtue and Monthly Virtue are the convergence of the sun and moon's radiance; how could any darkness or evil dare to dwell within? Therefore, treachery and theft cease, evil intentions hide, divine forces support, and evil spirits flee. This is the virtuous and refined energy of heaven and earth, a spirit that transforms misfortune into good fortune. When a person's destiny carries these, it is a great blessing. If further supported by the Fortune God, Travelling Horse, Heavenly Noble, or Mentor, or if the Dual Virtue itself becomes the Earner, Executive, Mentor, or Talent, combining with other noble patterns, and encountering the Three Wonders or the Five Elements in a state of birth and prosperity, without harm or destruction, then the person will enjoy official glory and wealth, and will not suffer violent misfortune in life. If harmed or broken, endeavors will fail. Even if the destiny is not of a high standard, being poor, humble, or dangerous, seeing the Dual Virtue can still provide some relief.
It is also said: The Heavenly Virtue should be supported by the Monthly General. For example, in the first month (Yin), the Heavenly Virtue is Ding, which likes the Hai General, but fears Gui harming Ding. In the second month (Mao), it is Shen (Kun trigram), which likes the Xu General, but fears Yin clashing with Shen. In the third month (Chen), it is Ren, which likes the You General, but fears Wu harming Ren. In the fourth month (Si), it is Xin, which likes the Shen General, but fears Ding harming Xin. In the fifth month (Wu), it is Qian trigram, which likes the Wei General, but fears Ji breaking it. In the sixth month (Wei), it is Jia, which likes the Wu General, but fears Geng harming Jia. In the seventh month (Shen), it is Gui, which likes the Si General, but fears Ji harming Gui. In the eighth month (You), it is Gen trigram, which likes the Chen General, but fears Shen breaking it. In the ninth month (Xu), it is Bing, which likes the Mao General, but fears Ren harming Bing. In the tenth month (Hai), it is Yi, which likes the Yin General, but fears Xin harming Yi. In the eleventh month (Zi), it is Xun trigram, which likes the Chou General, but fears Hai breaking it. In the twelfth month (Chou), it is Geng, which likes the Zi General, but fears Bing harming Geng.
For the Monthly Virtue: In Yin, Wu, Xu months, it is Bing, which combines with Xin, but fears Ren harming it. In Hai, Mao, Wei months, it is Jia, which combines with Ji, but fears Geng harming it. In Shen, Zi, Chen months, it is Ren, which combines with Ding, but fears Wu harming it. In Si, You, Chou months, it is Geng, which combines with Yi, but fears Bing harming it. If these fears occur, the virtue combination is not achieved. Between the two virtues, the Heavenly Virtue is considered more important, followed by the Monthly Virtue. If they transform into the Earner, Executive, or Mentor, their blessing power is doubled. If the Day Stem itself is one of these, it is especially auspicious.
The "Secret Formula" says: "When the Heavenly and Monthly Virtues are at the Day Pillar, the person will have no danger or worry in life. If they also encounter the General Star, they will ascend to the prime minister's mansion." The "Ghost Valley" says: "With one virtue supporting, all dangers are resolved. For men, it means a smooth rise to high positions; for women, it means abundant blessings and longevity." The "Jade Mirror" says: "If the trigram encounters the Life-Giving Spirit and the Heavenly Virtue combines, the person will live a long life." The "Three Destiny Keys" says: "The Heavenly and Monthly Virtues are the virtues of the same yin-yang category but in different positions. When a person encounters them, their literary talent will be outstanding, and their official career will be pure and distinguished." The "Three Carts" says: "Supported by the Heavenly and Monthly Virtues, one benefits in officialdom and suffers few illnesses." The "Heart Mirror" says: "The Heavenly and Monthly Virtues are for rescue and relief; a hundred disasters will not cause harm." The "Heart Appearance Rhapsody" says: "With the Dual Virtue and Mentor, one acts with kindness and spreads virtue." The "Subtle and Profound Rhapsody" says: "Kind, gentle, intelligent, and wise — the Heavenly and Monthly Virtues bring auspiciousness." The "Profound Purpose Rhapsody" says: "When the destiny is weak and the Warlord is strong, one needs the auspiciousness of the Heavenly and Monthly Virtues."
A poem says: "The Heavenly Virtue is originally great and auspicious; if encountered at the Day or Hour, it is most excellent. For scholars, it ensures success in examinations; for commoners, all endeavors prosper." Another says: "If a person's destiny encounters the Monthly Virtue, all pursuits will bring many benefits. Scholars, farmers, artisans, and merchants will each find their advantage; brothers, wives, and children will have no conflicts." Another says: "When the yin and yang destinies encounter the Warlord, the Dual Virtue transforms the Warlord into authority. If the Day or Hour encounters the Heavenly and Monthly Virtues, men will become first-rank officials, and women will receive noble titles." Another says: "When the Heavenly and Monthly Virtues are encountered together, one's nobility rivals that of Fen Yang, and one's wealth rivals that of Shi Chong. One inherits abundant blessings from ancestors, or else achieves success at a young age." Another says: "The sun's transit governs the stars; when it enters its house and bureau, for example, if born in the first month, the Zi hour is auspicious; in the second month, the Hai hour; in the third month, the Xu hour; in the fourth month, the You hour; in the fifth month, the Shen hour; in the sixth month, the Wei hour; in the seventh month, the Wu hour; in the eighth month, the Si hour; in the ninth month, the Chen hour; in the tenth month, the Mao hour; in the eleventh month, the Yin hour; in the twelfth month, the Chou hour. Being born at such a time, and if it also relates to the Day Stem-Branch, is most auspicious."
Modern Interpretation: The Heavenly Virtue and Monthly Virtue are places where the light of the sun and moon converges; all darkness, evil, and filth cannot hide. Therefore, those with the Dual Virtue can curb treachery, make petty people retreat, receive divine assistance, and keep evil spirits away. This is the condensation of heaven and earth's virtue and refinement, a guardian spirit that transforms danger into good fortune. If a person's destiny carries them, it is a great blessing. If further supported by auspicious stars like the Fortune God, Travelling Horse, Heavenly Noble, or Mentor, or if the Dual Virtue itself happens to be the Earner, Executive, Mentor, or Talent in the destiny, combined with other noble patterns, and encountering the "Three Wonders" or the Five Elements in a state of birth and prosperity, without damage or destruction, then the person is likely to have a smooth official career, a prominent status, and few unexpected disasters in life. Even if the Dual Virtue is damaged, or the original chart combination is poor and belongs to a poor, humble, or dangerous destiny, seeing the Dual Virtue can still provide some mitigation and rescue.
Another view holds that the Heavenly Virtue Noble is best supported by the "Monthly General." For example, in the first month (Yin month), the Heavenly Virtue is Ding, which likes to see the Hai General, but fears Gui water overcoming Ding; in the second month (Mao month), the Heavenly Virtue is Shen (Kun trigram), which likes to see the Xu General, but fears Yin clashing with Shen... (correspondences for other months are as in the table above, explanations omitted). The Monthly Virtue Noble involves the concept of "Virtue Combination." For example, in Yin, Wu, Xu months, the Monthly Virtue is Bing, and Bing combines with Xin, but it fears Ren water overcoming Bing; otherwise, the virtue combination is difficult to achieve. Between the two virtues, the Heavenly Virtue is generally considered more important than the Monthly Virtue. If the Dual Virtue also happens to be the Earner, Executive, or Mentor in the destiny, the blessing power is doubled. If the Day Stem itself is the stem of the Dual Virtue, it is especially auspicious.
Various classical texts praise the Dual Virtue from different angles: The "Secret Formula" emphasizes its role in ensuring safety and aiding officialdom; the "Ghost Valley" says it resolves all dangers and helps men achieve high positions and women enjoy blessings; the "Jade Mirror" associates it with longevity; the "Three Destiny Keys" says it brings outstanding literary talent and a pure official career; the "Three Carts" says it benefits officialdom and health; the "Heart Mirror" says it can rescue from a hundred disasters; the "Heart Appearance Rhapsody" says it makes people charitable; the "Subtle and Profound Rhapsody" describes it as making people kind, gentle, and intelligent; the "Profound Purpose Rhapsody" believes it is especially needed when the destiny is weak and the Warlord is strong.
The quoted poems further elaborate: The Heavenly Virtue is a great auspicious star; its power is strongest when in the Day or Hour Pillar, benefiting examinations and all endeavors. The Monthly Virtue makes all affairs smooth and family harmonious. The Dual Virtue can also transform the fierceness of the Warlord, helping one achieve high positions and titles. If the Dual Virtue is encountered together, one's wealth and nobility can rival ancient giants, or one may inherit ancestral blessings or achieve success at a young age. Finally, a method based on the sun's transit ("sun's course") is mentioned, suggesting that being born in a specific month at a specific hour (e.g., first month at Zi hour, second month at Hai hour, etc.), and if that hour's stem-branch has a good relationship with the Day Pillar, is also a very auspicious sign.
