Gold God Pattern (金神格): The Forging of Unyielding Metal

In the system of BaZi patterns, the Gold God Pattern is renowned for its unique, unyielding, and austere energy. The core of this pattern lies in harnessing an exceptionally strong and rigid Metal energy. The ancients called this a "God of Ruin" due to its fierce nature. Only through the forging and control of "Fire" can this destructive force be transformed into authority and nobility. As the saying goes, "When the Gold God meets Fire, one's might shakes the borders."

How to Identify This Pattern

The key to identifying this pattern lies in the Hour Pillar. When the Day Master is Jia Wood (甲) or Ji Earth (己), and the birth occurred during one of the three specific hours—Gui You (癸酉), Ji Si (己巳), or Yi Chou (乙丑)—the framework for the Gold God Pattern is initially established. However, the ultimate success or failure of the pattern depends entirely on the strength of "Fire" in the birth chart and the person's life luck cycles.

Key points are as follows:

  • Core Hour Pillars: Only three specific Hour Pillars form this pattern, with no exceptions:
    • Gui You (癸酉)
    • Ji Si (己巳)
    • Yi Chou (乙丑)
  • Day Master Conditions: The pattern primarily revolves around Jia Wood (甲) and Ji Earth (己) Day Masters.
  • Key to Success: The birth chart (especially the Month Pillar) should ideally have strong-rooted Bing Fire (丙) or Ding Fire (丁), or Si (巳) or Wu (午) Fire. If the original chart has weak Fire, the pattern must rely on a Luck Cycle (大运) moving into a strong southern Fire region to activate its potential.
  • Primary Taboo: The most severe taboo is the presence of strong Ren Water (壬) or Gui Water (癸), or Hai (亥) or Zi (子) Water in the chart or in the Annual Cycle (流年). Water extinguishes the crucial Fire that controls the Gold God, amplifying its cold and destructive nature, and is the main factor in breaking the pattern.

The Internal Logic of the Pattern

People with the Gold God Pattern in their chart are typically resolute, decisive, and possess extraordinary willpower, embodying "sharp and decisive talent." Their essence carries a powerful, austere Metal energy. If this energy is effectively "smelted" by Fire, it is like steel tempered a hundred times—its destructive nature is transformed into authority, decisiveness, and outstanding leadership. Such individuals often excel in fields requiring a strong hand and boldness, such as the military, police, judiciary, and disciplinary supervision, wielding significant power.

Conversely, if the Gold God is not controlled by Fire, or if the Luck Cycle enters a Water phase that destroys the beneficial Fire, its "ruinous" nature will be fully exposed. The person may become violent, stubborn, and overly competitive, leading a life filled with obstacles, prone to legal disputes, accidents, and injuries, and in severe cases, even life-threatening situations.

Key Likes and Dislikes of the Pattern

  • Likes (Favorable Elements) :
    1. Fire-Wang Luck Cycle: This is the most favorable element for the pattern. A Luck Cycle moving into the southern Fire region (Si, Wu, Wei) is called "Gold God enters the Fire region, wealth and nobility resound under heaven," indicating a period of great achievement, fame, and fortune.
    2. Officer/Authority (Fire) : For a Jia Wood Day Master, Fire represents Talent (食神) and Maverick (傷官), which are used to control the Gold God acting as the Warlord (偏官), forming a noble "Talent/Maverick Controlling Warlord" pattern. For a Ji Earth Day Master, Fire represents the Mentor (正印) and Mystic (偏印), which both control the Gold God (acting as Talent/Maverick) and nourish the Day Master, also forming a noble pattern.
    3. Wealth Star (Earth) : The presence of the Wealth Star (Earth) in the chart or Luck Cycle is also favorable. Wealth can generate the Officer/Authority (Fire) element (for a strong Self) and also represents the achievement of the pattern.
  • Dislikes (Unfavorable Elements) :
    1. Water-Wang Luck Cycle: This is the greatest taboo for the pattern. A Luck Cycle moving into the northern Water region (Hai, Zi, Chou) will completely extinguish the controlling Fire, leading to "unspeakable disaster" and immediate calamity.
    2. Uncontrolled Gold God: If the original chart lacks strong Fire and the person does not experience a Fire Luck Cycle, the destructive nature of the Gold God cannot be transformed, and the pattern becomes an omen of misfortune rather than success.
    3. Punishment (刑) and Clash (冲) Damage: If the chart experiences Punishments or Clashes, especially those that damage the beneficial Fire element, it is also a sign of the pattern breaking.

Classical Text Commentary

San Ming Tong Hui (三命通会)

The Gold God is a god of ruin, also known as the "Di Sha" (的杀). It only appears in three hours: Gui You (癸酉), Ji Si (己巳), and Yi Chou (乙丑). This pattern primarily concerns the six Jia (甲) days. When these three hours are seen, it is considered the Gold God. The Jia Zi (甲子) and Jia Chen (甲辰) days are the best. The pattern can only be used if the Month Pillar has Metal energy (to make the Gold God strong) and the chart forms a Fire Bureau (to have a means of control). If the chart also has the Warlord (七杀) or Blade (羊刃), it is a true noble. If the Month Pillar does not have Metal energy and does not form a Fire Bureau, then it should be judged by other patterns, such as the Wealth-Officer or Mentor-Mystic patterns, or various Following patterns. Although Water is taboo, it can be acceptable if the pattern has a transformation (e.g., following or combining). If there is no transformation and the person enters a Water Luck Cycle, disaster is unspeakable.

Another view: A fierce person uses strength as their ability. If their authority is not singular, others will insult them. However, extreme hardness is easily broken. Without control, there is no balance between leniency and strictness, or hardness and softness. How can one walk the path of moderation? If one can regulate and tame this energy to achieve a state of balance, fortune and nobility will follow. Those who obtain this pattern have sharp, decisive talent and an unyielding will. If the Four Pillars form a Fire Bureau and the Luck Cycle moves into a Fire region, this pattern is judged. If born in a Hai, Mao, or Wei month (Wood-wang month) and the Luck Cycle moves into Fire, this pattern can also be judged. If born in a Water month or the Luck Cycle moves into Water, this pattern is not used. If born in a Chen month and the Luck Cycle moves north (Water), it can be judged as a Mentor pattern, which likes Officer/Authority and Blade, and fears Punishment and Clash. If the Hour Pillar is Gui You, You is the formal Officer of Jia Wood, and it should not be judged by the "Gold God likes Fire control" theory but as a formal Officer pattern. Luck Cycles in Wealth-Officer strong regions will bring fortune. If the Year and Month Pillars again see Shen (申) or Geng (庚), causing a mix of Officer and Warlord, it is still judged as the Gold God pattern. Seeing Fire in the Annual Cycle or Luck Cycle will bring fortune; seeing Water will bring disaster. If the chart has Fire but does not move into a Fire Luck Cycle, it is still difficult to prosper. It likes to see the Wealth Star; moving into a Wealth Luck Cycle can also bring prosperity. The six Ji (己) days seeing these three hours are also judged as the Gold God pattern. If the Luck Cycle moves into a Metal or Water region, disaster will immediately occur. A Wealth Luck Cycle is good, and a Fire Luck Cycle is even better.

The "Du Bu" (独步) says: "Jia day Gold God, especially suitable for Fire region; Ji day Gold God, why bother with Fire control." It also says: "Jia born in spring, hour commits Gold God. Water region does not prosper, heavy Fire makes the name true." It also says: "Jia, Yi born in Chou month, hour carries Gold God, month stem sees Warlord, both eyes will be blind." The classics say: "Gold God meets Fire, might shakes the borders." The "Yao Xiang Fu" (妖祥赋) says: "Gold God likes Warlord but fears Punishment and Clash." The "Yuan Ji Fu" (元机赋) says: "Gold God is most suitable for control." The "Mi Jue" (秘诀) says: "Gold God likes Fire-wang regions; if it moves north, it is unlucky." The "Xiang Xin Fu" (相心赋) says: "Gold God noble pattern, in Fire region it is truly marvelous. Has sharp, decisive talent, no heart for exploitation or deception." The "Ding Zhen Pian" (定真篇) says: "Gold God Luck Cycle reaches Water region, body and corpse will be separated."

Poems say: "Gui You, Ji Si, and Yi Chou, these three Gold God hours are to be feared. In Fire region, meeting Warlord and Blade is noble; in Water region, Punishment and Chou will bring disaster." Another: "Gui You, Ji Si, and Yi Chou, meeting them in the hour is a blessing. But the person is arrogant and relies on talent, needing control. Meeting Warlord and Blade makes a true noble." Another: "Jia day person born strong, meeting You in the hour can be Gold God. If meeting Si hour, control is still needed; meeting You or Chou hours, no excessive tempering is needed." Another: "Jia day, hour sees Gold God, Warlord and Blade together make a true noble. Wood and Fire strong regions bring wealth and rank; meeting Metal and Water will surely harm the body." Another: "Gold God meets Fire, nobility is certain; meeting Metal and Water, disaster is sure. Luck Cycle reaches Fire region, much prosperity; high rank and wealthy family, both are suitable." Another: "Hour meets Gold God, much noble energy; meeting Blade again brings balance. If moving into Water Luck Cycle, poverty and illness; controlled by Fire, fame and high position." Another: "Hour pillar Gold God, Gui You is one; Ji Si and Yi Chou are the same. Four pillars with much Water, avoid moving north; Five Elements with strong Fire, suitable to move south. Meeting Blade turns misfortune to fortune; meeting Warlord turns bitterness to sweetness. Sharp, decisive, and upright; properly tamed, one gains an official title."

For example, the Ming Dynasty Minister of War Fang Fengshi's chart: Ren Wu (壬午), Yi Si (乙巳), Jia Chen (甲辰), Ji Si (己巳). Jia Wood Day Master sees Ji Si hour, making the Gold God in charge. Si and Wu are pure Fire, providing proper control. His Luck Cycle moved through the southern Fire region, so he passed the imperial exams young; when it moved into the western Officer/Warlord region, his career was hindered. Later, when it moved into the northern Water region, how could he become a top official? It is speculated that because his chart had much Fire and Jia Wood lacked a Mentor, the northern Water region supplemented the Mentor element. The county magistrate Zhao Keng had the same chart, but when his Luck Cycle reached the Water-wang Xin Hai (辛亥) period, he became crazy from wine and women and squandered his family fortune. This is because Fang was from Chu (southern Fire region) and Zhao was from Yan (northern Water region), so the regional Five Elements energy was different.

The Yuan Dynasty Prime Minister Tuotuo's chart: Ren Chen (壬辰), Ding Wei (丁未), Ji Chou (己丑), Ji Si (己巳). The Gold God was born in the sixth month (Wei) when Fire is strong. Wei is the Wood library containing the Warlord. The Year Stem Ren (壬) appeared, and Ding (丁) and Ren (壬) combined to form Wood, assisting the Officer. He also had the Blade as a favorable element. His Luck Cycle moved west, where Wu and Ji Earth controlled Water, and Shen and You Metal controlled the Warlord. When he moved into the Xu (戌) Luck Cycle, it opened the Fire library, giving the Gold God control, and he rose to the position of Prime Minister. When he moved into the Water-wang Hai (亥) Luck Cycle, at age 37 in the Wu Chen (戊辰) year, the Annual Cycle opened the Water library, the Gold God lost control, and the Wealth element generated the Officer/Warlord, causing disaster. He was eventually killed by poisoned wine.
