Jian Lu Not Rich (建禄不富): Strong Self, Weak Wealth Pattern Analysis

In BaZi fortune analysis, "Jian Lu Not Rich" describes a specific situation within the Jian Lu Pattern (建禄格). Its core meaning is that although the Day Master is born in its own Prosperity (禄) month, giving it a strong foundation, the combination of elements in the chart makes wealth accumulation nearly impossible. The monthly Prosperity position is like the family estate — if it is dominated by peers (比肩), the Day Master itself struggles to benefit. Without effective balancing mechanisms in the chart, this pattern forms.

How to Identify This Pattern

This pattern requires the "monthly Prosperity" premise, combined with weak wealth stars, rampant Peers and Rivals, and a lack of effective control or transformation.

Specifically:

  • Monthly Pillar is Prosperity: The Earthly Branch of the birth month must be the Day Master's "Official" (临官) position. For example: Jia (Yang Wood) Day Master born in Yin (Tiger) month; Geng (Yang Metal) Day Master born in Shen (Monkey) month.
  • Weak Wealth Stars: The Earner (正财) and Venturer (偏财) stars in the chart are weak — either floating on Heavenly Stems without roots, or deeply hidden within the monthly Prosperity branch, where they are divided by the Peers within.
  • Abundant Peers and Rivals: Many Peers (比肩) and Rivals (劫财) appear on both Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches, forming a powerful force that further divides the already limited wealth resources.
  • No Effective Rescue: The chart lacks strong Executive (正官) or Warlord (偏官) stars to restrain the Peers and Rivals, nor does it have rooted Talent (食神) or Maverick (伤官) stars to transform their energy into generating wealth.

Core Meaning of the Pattern

People with this pattern are usually energetic and capable, but repeatedly frustrated in wealth accumulation, often feeling their efforts are not rewarded proportionally. The root problem is "Peers and Rivals seizing wealth" (比劫夺财). The monthly "Prosperity" is the source of the Day Master's energy, but it is also the base of the Peers — symbolizing that early-life resources, family assets, or opportunities are easily shared or even taken by siblings, colleagues, or competitors.

Therefore, such individuals struggle to make money throughout life, often working for others' benefit while keeping little for themselves. They find it hard to save and frequently lose money through financial dealings with people in their social circle. Without rescue, they may feel ambitious but unable to achieve their goals, fall into financial disputes, and remain limited in life. However, "not rich" is not absolute. The key to this pattern is "transformation." If the chart has strong Executive stars to control the Rivals, or abundant Talent/Maverick stars to drain excess energy and generate wealth, or if the Wealth stars are firmly rooted elsewhere, the pattern can break through. In such cases, the strong foundation provided by the Prosperity becomes an excellent base for carrying great wealth.

Favorable and Unfavorable Gods for This Pattern

This pattern itself is a "disease," so the key to favorable and unfavorable gods is finding the right "medicine":

  • Favorable (Medicine) :

    1. Executive/Warlord Controls Rivals: Strong Executive (正官) or Warlord (偏官) stars are the most effective "antidote." They suppress the excessive Peers and Rivals, protect the Wealth stars, and allow wealth to return to the Day Master.
    2. Talent/Maverick Generates Wealth: Strong Talent (食神) or Maverick (伤官) stars act as a "bridge," channeling the excess energy of the Day Master and Peers into the ability to create wealth.
    3. Wealth Stars Properly Positioned: If Wealth stars are not in the monthly branch but have strong roots in the Day Branch, Hour Branch, etc., it means the Day Master has an "independent treasury" not directly shared by others, allowing wealth accumulation.
  • Unfavorable (Worsening the Disease) :

    1. Peer/Rival Luck Cycle: This is the biggest taboo. If the Luck Cycle (大运) brings more Peers or Rivals, it triggers intense wealth-seizing conflicts, leading to financial loss, disputes, and even instability in marriage.
    2. Mystic/Mentor Support: Strong Mystic (偏印) or Mentor (正印) stars nourish the already excessive Peers and Rivals, feeding the unfavorable god and worsening the pattern's flaws.
    3. Floating Wealth Stars: If the Wealth stars in the chart are already weak and floating without roots, the "weak wealth" problem deepens, making it harder to find a rescue opportunity.

Classical Texts

"Three Lives Comprehensive Guide" (《三命通会》)

Jian Lu, means Jia born in Yin month, Yi born in Mao month, etc. The month represents parents; people are born from parents, just as people come out from a house. Therefore, the monthly pillar is the gateway. When the Luck Cycle leaves the monthly pillar, it is called "going out the door," and the fortune's ups and downs begin. For Jia born in Yin month, the Prosperity is strong in Yin, and Jia Wood is a Peer. The Peer first occupies the wealth in the Prosperity. It is like a person's property being kept in the parents' home, with the elder brother (Peer) managing it first. The younger brother (Day Master) cannot seek his own fame and fortune. Externally, he encounters no wealth or prosperity. He can only use the limited existing things, which gradually diminish. How can he become wealthy? If the Luck Cycle again encounters Peers and Rivals, it is like meeting more brothers who have a share in the family property. But the property has already been used up, and there is nothing to divide. This inevitably leads to lawsuits and disputes, loss of wealth, wife, children, and separation from father. Hence, Jian Lu is not rich.

For example, Gui Hai, Ding Si, Bing Yin, Jia Wu. Bing Fire born in Si month is Jian Lu, sitting on Yin Wood as Long Life (长生). Yin and Wu combine into a Fire Bureau, making the Day Master extremely strong. Although there are Gui Hai official and Warlord Water, they are destroyed by the Shangguan (Maverick) in Si (Wu Earth) and Wu (Ji Earth). The Day Master is extremely strong but has no Executive to rely on and no Wealth to support, hence poverty and low status.

Another example: Wu Shen, Jia Yin, Jia Chen, Ding Mao. The monthly pillar is Jian Lu. The Day Branch Chen is a Wealth Treasury. The Year Stem Wu is a Venturer. The Year Branch Shen is a Warlord. This seems good, but the Hour Pillar Ding Mao brings Maverick and Rival. Jia Wood takes Xin Metal as Executive, but it is harmed by Ding Fire. Jia takes Wu Earth as Wealth, but it is seized by the Jia on the Month Stem and the Yi Wood in Mao. Jia wants to use Shen Metal as Warlord, but it is clashed and overcome by Yin Wood and Bing Fire. Bing Fire is Talent, but it is clashed and overcome by Ren Water in Shen. Wealth, Executive, and Talent are all harmed, hence poverty and low status.

Another example: Ding Si, Bing Wu, Ji Wei, Wu Chen. Ji Earth born in Wu month is Jian Lu. The Day Master sits on Wei, which is a Blade (羊刃). The Rivals (Fire and Earth) are too heavy. The Day Master and its Peers all carry Blades. When the Luck Cycle reaches Ren Yin, the Peers (Wu and Ji Earth) seize Ren Water (Wealth), causing Wealth and Mentor (Bing Ding Fire) to harm each other. The Earthly Branches Yin and Si form a Punishment (刑), and Yin Wood Executive punishes the root of the Prosperity. In the Ji Chou year, Chou and Wei clash, stirring up the Blades, leading to death by punishment.

The poem says: "Born with Jian Lu in the gateway of the monthly pillar is a flaw; it is hard to inherit ancestral property or encounter abundant wealth. Wife and subordinates repeatedly suffer defeat and ruin; one may become a long-lived white-haired elder. If the chart can form a Following or Transformation pattern, then naturally one can be at ease in the pursuit of fame and fortune."
