Heavenly Stem Hidden Fortune (天元暗禄): The BaZi's Built-in Treasure

In BaZi (八字) fortune analysis, there is a pattern regarded as the epitome of "innate wealth and nobility" — the Heavenly Stem Hidden Fortune (天元暗禄). The "Heavenly Stem" (天元) refers to the Day Master (日主), representing the individual; while "Hidden Fortune" (暗禄) means that within the Day Pillar's Earthly Branch (日支), which symbolizes the person's foundation, a complete and self-sustaining system of wealth and power is quietly concealed. The essence of this pattern lies in the fact that the core resources needed for success — whether wealth, authority, or wisdom — are not entirely dependent on external gifts but are innate, deeply rooted in the individual's life foundation. Therefore, it is often regarded as a symbol of deep blessings and a solid foundation.

How to Identify

This pattern has a clear definition and applies only to four specific Day Pillars: Geng Yin (庚寅), Yi Si (乙巳), Bing Shen (丙申), and Ji Hai (己亥). Its nobility stems from the Earthly Branch on which the Day Master sits, which conceals a perfect combination of Wealth, Authority, Mentor, and Talent elements.

The detailed analysis is as follows:

  • Geng Yin Day (庚寅日): The Day Master Geng Metal sits on the Venturer (偏财) Yin Wood. Yin conceals Jia Wood (Venturer), Bing Fire (Warlord), and Wu Earth (Mystic). These three form a continuous generating cycle: "Wealth generates Warlord, Warlord generates Mystic, Mystic generates the Day Master." This indicates the ability to find vitality and turning points in adversity.
  • Yi Si Day (乙巳日): The Day Master Yi Wood sits on the Maverick (伤官) Si Fire. Si conceals Bing Fire (Maverick), Wu Earth (Earner), and Geng Metal (Executive). This forms a smooth transformation of "Maverick generates Earner, Earner generates Executive," indicating that talent can effectively transform into practical benefits and status.
  • Bing Shen Day (丙申日): The Day Master Bing Fire sits on the Venturer (偏财) Shen Metal. Shen conceals Geng Metal (Venturer), Ren Water (Warlord), and Wu Earth (Talent). This forms a "Talent controls Warlord" combination, meaning the ability to use wisdom and skills to handle pressure and challenges, turning Warlord into authority.
  • Ji Hai Day (己亥日): The Day Master Ji Earth sits on the Earner (正财) Hai Water. Hai conceals Ren Water (Earner) and Jia Wood (Executive). This is a "Wealth and Executive both beautiful" combination. Additionally, the Heavenly Stem Ji and the Hidden Stem Jia Wood form a "Jia-Ji secret combination," indicating a natural affinity and connection with authority and noble people.

Core Meaning of the Pattern

Individuals with the Heavenly Stem Hidden Fortune pattern are born with a solid foundation and inner potential for achieving success. Because their Day Pillar itself forms a self-consistent "microcosm," they typically possess strong independence and practical problem-solving abilities. They do not need to overly rely on external conditions; relying solely on their inherent strength, they have the opportunity to create wealth and fame. Such people are often intelligent, steady, and have a solid foundation, enjoying a lifetime of good fortune and prosperity.

However, the essence of this pattern is entirely concentrated in the Day Pillar, so the Day Branch (Spouse Palace/Foundation) must never be damaged. If the Day Branch is severely punished or clashed by other Earthly Branches, it is like the foundation of a building being shaken, causing the internal wealth system to collapse and turning into misfortune. Similarly, if other Stems and Branches in the Four Pillars violently conflict with the perfect combination within the Day Pillar, it can also break the pattern.

Favorable and Unfavorable Points

The likes and dislikes of this pattern need to be judged separately for the four different Day Pillars. The core principle is to protect the Five Elements circulation within the Day Branch from being disrupted:

  • Geng Yin Day: Favorable to see Earth (Mentor/Mystic) to support the Day Master; also favorable to see Yi Wood (Earner) and Ding Fire (Executive) in the Heavenly Stems to draw out the hidden nobility. Most unfavorable is excessive Bing Fire (Warlord) without control.
  • Yi Si Day: Favorable to see Water (Mentor/Mystic) to nourish and protect the Day Master; favorable to see Geng Metal (Executive) and Wu Earth (Earner) in the Heavenly Stems to draw out the hidden elements. Most unfavorable is Xin Metal (Warlord) mixing with the Executive, and also unfavorable is Hai Water clashing with Si Fire.
  • Bing Shen Day: Favorable to see Wood (Mentor/Mystic) to support the Day Master; favorable to see Geng or Xin Metal (Wealth) and Gui Water (Executive) in the Heavenly Stems to draw out the hidden elements. Most unfavorable is excessive Wu or Ji Earth (Talent/Maverick) damaging the Executive.
  • Ji Hai Day: Favorable to have pure Wealth and Executive (Water and Wood) without mixing; even better if Fire (Mentor/Mystic) supports. Most unfavorable is Metal (Talent/Maverick) harming the Jia Wood Executive hidden in Hai, forming the unfavorable "Maverick sees Executive" situation.

Classical Text

"San Ming Tong Hui" (三命通会)

This pattern takes the four days of Geng Yin, Yi Si, Bing Shen, and Ji Hai. For example, the Geng day takes Ding Fire as the Executive. If the year, month, or hour pillars do not have Ding, then there is no Executive. It is fortunate that Geng sits on Yin, which contains the Fire energy in the Birth stage. Geng can overcome this Fire to become the Executive. Yin is the Lu position of Jia Wood, which is the mother of Fire. Mother and son have a continuous relationship. It is favorable to have Wu or Ji Earth in the year, month, or hour pillars to support the Heavenly Stem. It is even better to see Yi Wood and Ding Fire in the Four Pillars. If Bing Fire Warlord appears, it is favorable to have Ren, Gui Water, or Hai, Zi to control it.

Yi Si day sits on the Birth stage of Metal as the Executive, and the Lu of Wu Earth as the Wealth. It is favorable to see Geng and Wu drawn out in the Heavenly Stems, and to have Ren, Gui Water, and Mao Wood to support. It is unfavorable to have Xin Metal Warlord, because Si originally contains strong Bing Fire. It requires Ren, Gui Water, or Hai, Zi to remove the Fire energy to be beautiful.

Bing Shen day favors Geng and Xin Metal as Wealth, Gui Water as Executive, and Jia and Yi Wood as Mentor. It is unfavorable to have Wu and Ji Earth as Maverick. Ji Hai day sits on the Birth stage of Jia Wood hidden in Hai as the Executive. It is unfavorable to have Metal as Maverick to harm it.

Modern Interpretation: This pattern specifically selects the four days of Geng Yin, Yi Si, Bing Shen, and Ji Hai. Taking the Geng day as an example, it originally takes Ding Fire as the Executive. If the year, month, and hour Heavenly Stems do not have Ding, superficially there is no Executive. But the beauty is that Geng Metal sits on Yin Wood, which contains Fire energy in the "Birth" stage. Geng Metal (Yang Metal) can "overcome" this Fire to become the Executive. Yin is the Lu position of Jia Wood, and Wood can generate Fire, like mother and son generating each other, with a coherent logic. Therefore, the year, month, and hour pillars favor Wu Earth and Ji Earth to support the Day Master Geng. If the entire BaZi also sees Yi Wood (Wealth) and Ding Fire (Executive), it is even better. If Bing Fire Warlord appears, it is best to have Ren, Gui Water, or Hai, Zi Water to control it.

Yi Si day sits on the "Birth" stage of Metal (Geng Metal is in Birth at Si) as the Executive, and the Lu position of Wu Earth (Si) as the Wealth. The BaZi favors seeing Geng and Wu drawn out in the Heavenly Stems again, and also needs Ren, Gui Water, and Mao Wood to support the Day Master. It is unfavorable to have Xin Metal Warlord to mix, because Si originally contains strong Bing Fire (Maverick). It must have Ren, Gui Water, or Hai, Zi Water to harmonize this Fire energy for the pattern to be perfect.

Bing Shen day favors seeing Geng and Xin Metal as Wealth, Gui Water as Executive, and Jia and Yi Wood as Mentor. It is unfavorable to have Wu and Ji Earth as Maverick. Ji Hai day sits on the "Birth" stage of Wood (Jia Wood) hidden in Hai as the Executive. It is unfavorable to have Metal as Maverick to harm it.

The scripture says: "When Geng day meets the Yin position (Geng Yin day), its Lu and power (Wealth and Executive) are joyful. If it also meets Bing and Ding Fire, life will surely be upright (longevity)." It also says: "When Geng day meets Yin, and coincidentally (the Heavenly Stem) has Bing Fire, (as long as) the Day Master is strong, there is no danger." It also says: "When Bing Fire faces the Shen position (Bing Shen day), if (the Heavenly Stem) again meets Yang Water (Ren Water Warlord), it is difficult to obtain longevity; when Ji Earth enters the Hai palace (Ji Hai day), if (the Heavenly Stem) again sees Yin Wood (Yi Wood Warlord), it will ultimately harm longevity." It also says: "When Yi Wood enters the Xun palace (Si), it is called unending (endless life)." (These statements) refer to these four days.

For example, the BaZi of Minister Wen Yuan: Geng Zi, Jia Shen, Geng Yin, Bing Xu; the BaZi of Minister Pan Huang: Bing Chen, Bing Shen, Bing Shen, Ren Chen; the BaZi of a Censor: Xin Si, Xin Chou, Ji Hai, Bing Yin; the BaZi of a Deputy Commissioner: Ding Hai, Ren Yin, Ji Hai, Yi Hai; the BaZi of a County Magistrate: Jia Zi, Ding Mao, Yi Si, Bing Zi. These BaZi are all born on these days (Geng Yin, Bing Shen, Ji Hai, Yi Si).
