Tempered Gift (专禄要制) — The Commander's Forge
The Tempered Gift (专禄要制) is a highly specialized and potent Warlord (七殺) Pattern in BaZi. It describes a unique destiny forged in pressure, applicable only to individuals with a Geng (庚) Day Master born specifically during the Si (巳) hour. This isn't about a general Day Master in its Maturity (临官) stage; it's about a precise alchemy of elements. The Si (巳) branch is the "Birth" (长生) phase for Geng Metal, but it's a fiery forge containing both the challenging Bing (丙) Fire Warlord and the supportive Wu (戊) Earth Mystic (偏印). The pattern's essence is in the "need for tempering" (要制): the chart must possess the cooling Water—in the form of Ren (壬) or Gui (癸)—to master the internal fire, turning raw potential into disciplined power.
How to Identify the Pattern
The criteria are exceptionally specific: Only a chart with a Geng (庚) Day Master in the Si (巳) Hour Pillar qualifies. Furthermore, the Heavenly Stems (天干) must reveal Ren (壬) Water or Gui (癸) Water to subdue the Bing (丙) Fire Warlord hidden within the Si (巳) branch.
- Tempered Gift (专禄): This term refers exclusively to the Geng (庚) Day Master meeting the Si (巳) hour. Si is Geng's birthplace, containing Wu (戊) Earth (the Mystic) for nourishment and Bing (丙) Fire (the Warlord) for challenge—a dynamic source of both vitality and pressure.
- Need for Tempering (要制): This mandates that Ren (壬) Water (the Talent/食神) or Gui (癸) Water (the Maverick/傷官) appears in the Heavenly Stems to subdue ("tame") the internal Bing (丙) Fire Warlord. This creates the critical "Talent Tames Warlord" (食神制杀) dynamic that defines the pattern.
The Meaning of the Pattern
Those with a true Tempered Gift chart are born with the archetypal qualities of a commander. Geng (庚) Metal represents unyielding, axe-like strength, while Si (巳) is the furnace. This hour pillar alignment is like placing stubborn iron into the forge at the final stage of life's journey. The internal Wu (戊) Earth Mystic provides relentless resilience, ensuring the metal isn't consumed. The internal Bing (丙) Fire Warlord applies constant, refining pressure. The visible Ren or Gui Water acts as the quenching fluid, granting the wisdom and technique to control the process.
The result is an extraordinary individual: steadfast under immense stress, capable of transforming severe challenges into legitimate authority. This is the blueprint of the martial leader, one who can wield great power because they have been tempered by it.
What Helps and What Harms the Pattern
Favorable Factors
- A Strong Tempering Force: The Ren (壬) or Gui (癸) Water must be well-rooted and powerful enough to effectively control the Bing (丙) Fire. This is the non-negotiable foundation for the pattern's success.
- A Well-Rooted Day Master: The Geng (庚) Day Master benefits greatly from additional strong roots in other branches (like Shen/申 or You/酉), making the "self" robust enough to withstand trials and command the entire chart structure.
- Moderate Wealth Stars: The presence of some Wood (the Wealth element) can nourish the Warlord, raising the stakes and potential level of achievement—but only if the tempering Water force is strong enough to match the increased challenge.
Taboos & Pitfalls
- An Unchecked Warlord: The gravest error. If the chart has Geng at Si hour but lacks Ren or Gui Water, the Warlord runs wild. The "Birth" phase becomes a pit of danger, leading to chronic stress, illness, or sudden calamities.
- Luck Cycles that Fuel the Fire: When the Luck Cycle (大运) enters Yin (寅), Wu (午), or Xu (戌)—branches that amplify Fire—the Warlord's power surges. If the original chart's Water is too weak to contain it, disaster looms. As the classics warn, "When the Warlord arrives, disaster follows."
- The Overbearing Mystic: If Wu (戊) or Ji (己) Earth (the Mystic) becomes excessive, it can block and suppress the Ren or Gui Water (the useful gods). This "Mystic's Shadow" (枭神夺食) sabotages the tempering mechanism, bringing misfortune.
- Excessive Fire and Earth: A chart overwhelmed by Fire and Earth not only leaves the Warlord unrestrained but also parches the Mystic, so it can't effectively nourish the Metal Day Master. The result is a scorched, agitated, and potentially frail individual.
Classical Perspective
From San Ming Tong Hui (《
Interpretation: This pattern refers specifically to a Geng (庚) Day Master born in the Si (巳) hour. Si is Geng's birthplace, containing the "gifts" of Bing (丙) Fire and Wu (戊) Earth. Wu Earth nourishes Geng (as the Mystic), while Bing Fire acts as Geng's Warlord (七殺). The Four Pillars must show Ren (壬) or Gui (癸) Water to control the Bing Fire. When this condition is met, the person is destined to hold authority as a military commander. However, if the major luck cycle enters a Warlord (Fire)-dominant period, it is very inauspicious.
The verse explains: "The Geng Day Master known as 'Tempered Gift' arrives at the Si position. Only with tempering does its brilliance show. Such a one may hold military power and command, but if a powerful Warlord cycle suddenly arises, calamity will follow."
