Overcoming Fate (功夺造化) — BaZi Pattern Analysis
In BaZi (Chinese astrology), the "Overcoming Fate" pattern represents the resilience of life and dramatic twists of destiny. It paints a picture of a life journey from early hardship to late glory. "Fate" (造化) refers to the innate destiny established by the Year and Month Pillars, while "Overcoming" (功夺) denotes the final achievement symbolized by the Hour Pillar. The essence of this pattern is that the Year, Month, and Day Pillars (along with the Fetal Origin) are all in a state of decline and lifelessness, while the Hour Pillar alone sits in a position of "Self-Birth" (自坐长生) or "Self-Emperor" (自坐帝旺) — an extremely vigorous state. It is through this late-life vitality that the native forcibly "seizes" and reverses the entire course of destiny.
How to Identify the Pattern
The primary prerequisite for forming this pattern is that the Year, Month, and Day Pillars (along with the Fetal Origin) are all in a state of "death and extinction without vitality." At the same time, the Hour Pillar must be a strong Nayin (Sound Element) combination of "Self-Birth" or "Self-Emperor."
Specific conditions are as follows:
- Hour Pillar with Self-Birth (Nayin): The Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch of the Hour Pillar must be one of Bing Yin (丙寅), Wu Shen (戊申), Ji Hai (己亥), Jia Shen (甲申), or Xin Si (辛巳).
- Hour Pillar with Self-Emperor (Nayin): The Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch of the Hour Pillar must be one of Wu Wu (戊午), Gui You (癸酉), Bing Zi (丙子), or Xin Mao (辛卯).
- Key to Formation: The first three pillars must genuinely exhibit a state of decline, creating a stark contrast of "weak before, strong after" with the Hour Pillar. Additionally, the Hour Pillar must not fall into Void (空亡), nor should it suffer severe Punishment (刑), Clash (冲), or Harm (害).
Symbolism of the Pattern
Individuals with the Overcoming Fate pattern are quintessential late bloomers. Due to the weak foundation of the Year, Month, and Day Pillars, their early and middle years are often filled with obstacles: humble origins, difficulty in showcasing talents, and enduring various hardships. However, all the essence and potential energy of their destiny converge on the Hour Pillar, symbolizing that life's "achievements" are all in the later stage. Once the luck cycle enters middle to old age, activating the vigorous energy of the Hour Pillar, the native can achieve a remarkable leap. Their accomplishments and the dramatic transformation of their life are sufficient to completely "seize" and rewrite their early "fate," ultimately attaining wealth and success. These individuals are strong-willed people who, through relentless effort and late-life luck, completely rewrite their life script.
Favorable and Unfavorable Factors
-
Favorable:
- Strong Hour Pillar: As the sole hope of the entire chart, the Hour Pillar must have a solid foundation, with well-matched Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch, a pure Nayin, and must not fall into Void.
- Supportive Late Luck: The middle-to-late life luck cycles must move in a direction that generates and activates the vigorous energy of the Hour Pillar. This is the core key to realizing the pattern's potential.
- Early Mentor (印): If, within the declining early chart, there is a trace of the Mentor element (the element that generates the Day Master), it means that although the native faces difficulties, they will not become disheartened. They can persist in accumulating knowledge, preserving their strength and spirit for a late-life rise.
-
Unfavorable:
- Hour Pillar Clashed: This is the primary taboo of the pattern. As the only foundation of the chart, if the Hour Pillar suffers severe Punishment or Clash in the original chart or in the Annual or Luck Cycles, it is like cutting the "lifeline," destroying the pattern and leading to a life of unrelenting hardship.
- Hour Pillar in Void: If the Hour Pillar falls into Void, the blessings of late life become illusory, hopes are dashed, and the pattern cannot be established.
- Early Luck with Malefic Stars: If the early luck cycles further aggravate the declining chart with Punishment or Clash, making the situation even worse, the native may not be able to hold on until the arrival of late luck.
Classical Text
"Three Lives Comprehensive Guide" (《
Modern Interpretation: This classical text clearly states that when the Year, Month, Day, and Fetal Origin pillars are all in a state of death, extinction, and lifelessness, and only the Hour Pillar is in a position of "Self-Birth" or "Self-Emperor," this pattern is formed. For example, if the native's Nayin belongs to Metal, and the Year, Month, Day, and Fetal Origin are all without vitality, but the Hour Pillar is Gui You (癸酉) (Nayin Metal in Self-Emperor); for Fire, it is Wu Wu (戊午); for Water, Bing Zi (丙子); for Earth, Geng Zi (庚子) (textual controversy may exist); for Wood, Xin Mao (辛卯) — these are all Nayin in Self-Emperor positions. Alternatively, Hour Pillars like Xin Si (辛巳), Bing Yin (丙寅), Ji Hai (己亥), Jia Shen (甲申), and Wu Shen (戊申) belong to Nayin in Self-Birth positions. When assessing the fortune of Major and Minor Luck Cycles and the Annual Cycle, one should primarily evaluate their favorable or unfavorable relationship with the Hour Pillar. This is because a chart without any vitality cannot produce a person of substance or achievement.
