Reform Pattern (从革格) — Metal's Path of Unyielding Transformation
In the realm of BaZi (八字) fortune analysis, the Reform Pattern (从革格) stands as a distinct and powerful configuration. It belongs to the category of "Follow Strength Patterns" (专旺格). The term "Reform" (从革) is derived from the essential nature of the Metal element (金) — its capacity for both obedience and transformation. Just as metal can be smelted, forged, and reshaped into useful vessels, this pattern symbolizes a formidable energy that is resolute, decisive, and capable of aligning with overwhelming forces. The core requirement is that the Day Master (日主) must be Geng (Yang Metal) or Xin (Yin Metal), and the Earthly Branches (地支) of the entire chart must coalesce into an exceptionally powerful Metal force. This compels the Day Master's own energy to submit entirely to this dominant Metal influence. Metal governs righteousness (义), so individuals with this pattern often display bold decisiveness and a tendency to value loyalty over personal gain.
How to Identify This Pattern
The identification of this pattern hinges on the Day Master being Geng or Xin Metal, ideally born in autumn (Shen or You months). The Earthly Branches must form a complete "Shen-You-Xu" (申酉戌) Metal combination or a "Si-You-Chou" (巳酉丑) Metal triad. Most critically, the Four Pillars must not contain a strong and robust Executive (正官) or Warlord (七杀) — i.e., the Fire element — that would break the Metal's exclusive dominance.
-
Standard Reform Pattern (标准的从革格):
- Day Master (日主): Must be Geng (庚) or Xin (辛) Metal.
- Seasonal Influence (月令): Born in the month of Shen (申) or You (酉), when Metal energy is at its peak and most powerful.
- Branch Combination (地支组合): The Earthly Branches must completely form either the Shen-You-Xu (申酉戌) Metal combination or the Si-You-Chou (巳酉丑) Metal triad.
- Avoiding Unfavorable Elements (忌神规避): The Heavenly Stems (天干) and Earthly Branches of the Four Pillars must not contain strong Bing (丙) or Ding (丁) Fire, or Si (巳) or Wu (午) Fire. If there is only a very faint trace of Fire, it can paradoxically serve to "forge the true metal," but in such cases, it is best to have Water present to harmonize and protect.
- Favorable Element Pairing (喜神搭配): The pattern's quality is elevated if the chart contains Water (Talent (食神) or Maverick (伤官)) to drain and refine the excessive Metal energy (creating a "White Metal, Clear Water" configuration), or Earth (Mentor (正印) or Mystic (偏印)) to generate and support the Day Master.
-
Non-Standard Reform Pattern (非标准的从革格):
- Impure Seasonal Influence (月令不纯): The person is not born in autumn, for example, born in Chou (丑, Earth) or Xu (戌, Earth) months, yet the Earthly Branches still form a powerful Metal bureau.
- Flawed Configuration (格局有瑕): The chart contains Executive or Warlord (Fire), but it is very weak; or there is damp Earth (Chen (辰) or Chou (丑)) or strong Water to control or obscure the Fire's power.
- Conditions for Achievement (成就条件): This pattern is less pure. The Metal's momentum exists but is hindered. The person's achievements often depend on waiting for later Luck Cycles (大运) or Annual Cycles (流年) to clear these "root causes of illness" (like Fire or Wood) in order to unlock the pattern's potential.
Note: The terms "standard" and "non-standard" here do not directly equate to good or bad fortune. They describe the pattern's purity and the conditions required for success. A standard pattern is pure with clear inherent advantages; a non-standard pattern has flaws, and its success relies more heavily on the supplementation and alignment of later luck cycles.
Inherent Characteristics of the Pattern
Individuals whose charts enter the Reform Pattern are defined by their pure and abundant Metal energy. Their personalities are typically resolute and decisive, with a strong sense of justice and responsibility. They are loyal, value their promises, and approach matters with directness and courage, unafraid of challenges or difficulties. If the Metal energy in the chart is channeled by Water (creating the "White Metal, Clear Water" configuration), it signifies that their fierce strength is transformed into wisdom and talent. This indicates a person who is intelligent, perceptive, and possesses strong communication skills or artistic aptitude. If there is a faint presence of Fire to "forge" the Metal, it symbolizes an individual who can withstand tempering and ultimately achieve great things. They are particularly suited for fields requiring authority, discipline, and decisiveness, such as the military, police, judiciary, or financial management, and are likely to become figures of power. It is important to note that excessively strong Metal can also lead to a personality that is too rigid, stubborn, lacking in flexibility and tolerance, and sometimes appearing combative.
Favorable and Unfavorable Elements & Luck Cycle Trends
-
Favorable Elements and Luck Cycles (所喜的五行与运势):
- Water (Talent (食神) or Maverick (伤官)): This is the most optimal choice. When strong Metal encounters Water, its excessive sharpness is drained and refined. This transforms its raw power into wisdom, skill, and eloquence, forming the noble "White Metal, Clear Water" configuration.
- Earth (Mentor (正印) or Mystic (偏印)): Earth generates Metal, which can consolidate and strengthen the foundation of the pattern. Damp Earth like Chen (辰) or Chou (丑) is especially favorable, as it can both generate Metal and moisten the Metal energy, preventing it from becoming too dry and harsh.
- Metal (Peer (比肩) or Rival (劫财)): Encountering Metal in a Luck Cycle or Annual Cycle aligns with the pattern's dominant trend and is generally considered auspicious. It signifies gaining help from friends and peers, or an enhancement of one's own abilities.
-
Unfavorable Elements and Situations (所忌的五行与情形):
- Fire (Executive (正官) or Warlord (七杀)): This is the greatest taboo. If the original chart or a Luck/Annual Cycle brings strong Fire, it will directly overcome the dominant Metal. This is called "offending the dominant energy" (犯旺) and will severely damage the pattern's stability, easily leading to legal troubles, conflicts, accidents, and other dangers.
- Wood (Earner (正财) or Venturer (偏财)): Strong Metal inherently overcomes Wood. If a Luck or Annual Cycle brings strong Wood, it triggers a situation where "Peers/Rivals seize the Wealth" (比劫夺财). This can lead to financial loss, career instability, and strained relationships with friends and family.
- Branch Punishments (刑) and Clashes (冲): If the key Earthly Branches forming the Metal bureau (Shen, You, Xu, Si, Chou) encounter severe Punishments or Clashes in the chart or in the current year/cycle, it will destabilize the pattern's foundation, which is also an unfavorable signal.
Classical Text Commentary
From "Three Lives Comprehensive Guide" (三命通会):
When a Geng or Xin day sees the Si-You-Chou triad, it must be accompanied by one or two Bing, Ding, Si, or Wu elements to forge the vessel, but the Fire must not be excessive. For example, the three days Xin-Si, Xin-You, and Xin-Chou do not like being born in the fifth month (Wu, Horse), as they will be harmed by Fire. They are better suited for the eighth month (You, Rooster) or for having Water (Talent) and Earth (Mentor) to nurture them, which is auspicious. A poem says: "When the White Tiger meets Si-You-Chou, the Reform Pattern's name is doubly strong. If Bing, Ding, Si, Wu are met sparingly, noble energy forges an official career that lasts the longest." Another poem says: "When Metal resides in the Reform Pattern, nobles admire it; its creation is pure and lofty, with the deepest fortune. If the Four Pillars have Fire mixing in chaotically, one may turn to the monastic life or arts to make a living."
Modern Interpretation: The classical text indicates that for a Geng or Xin day person with the Si-You-Chou Metal triad, it is beneficial to have one or two Fire elements (Bing, Ding, Si, Wu) in the chart to "forge" the Metal into a useful vessel. However, the amount of Fire must be strictly limited. For instance, those born on Xin-Si, Xin-You, or Xin-Chou days should not be born in the month of Wu (午, Horse, the fifth lunar month), as the strong Fire will damage the Metal energy. It is more favorable to be born in the month of You (酉, Rooster, the eighth month), or to have Water (Talent) and Earth (Mentor) in the chart to nourish the Metal. The poems explain that when Metal (the White Tiger) encounters the Si-You-Chou triad, it forms the renowned Reform Pattern. If a small amount of Fire is present, it tempers the Metal into a noble tool, leading to a long and prosperous official career. Another poem warns that if Fire is too abundant and chaotic in the Four Pillars, the pattern is ruined, and the person may only find success in a monastic life or through artistic skills.
Case Study
BaZi: Wu-Shen (戊申) Xin-You (辛酉) Geng-Xu (庚戌) Yi-You (乙酉)
- Day Master (日主): Geng (庚) Metal.
- Seasonal Influence (月令): You (酉) month. Metal energy is in command and extremely strong.
- Earthly Branches (地支): Year branch Shen (申), Month branch You (酉), Day branch Xu (戌) — forming the complete Shen-You-Xu Metal combination. The Hour branch is also You (酉) Metal. The Metal energy in the entire chart is concentrated and exceptionally powerful.
- Heavenly Stems (天干): Wu (戊) Earth (Mentor) generates and supports the Day Master. Xin (辛) Metal (Rival) assists the Day Master. Although there is Yi (乙) Wood (Venturer), its power is minimal and is overcome by the dominant Metal, posing no threat.
- Pattern Judgment (格局判断): This chart completely lacks strong Bing, Ding, Si, or Wu Fire that would break the pattern. The Metal energy is pure and dominant, making this a standard Reform Pattern. It indicates a person with a resolute character, a strong sense of loyalty, and authority. They are well-suited for positions of real power in military or management roles.
