When this pattern is successfully formed, it signifies a person who can transform immense pressure and adversity into power and authority. It is a classic noble pattern of the weak overcoming the strong through strategic alignment.

How to Identify the Follow Warlord Pattern

The core of this pattern lies in the word "follow." The prerequisite is that the Day Master must be extremely weak, receiving no support or assistance whatsoever, while the Warlord energy in the chart converges to form an absolute dominance. The Day Master has no choice but to fully accept and align with this powerful, aggressive force.

• Characteristics of a True Follow Warlord Pattern:

  1. Day Master Has No Support: The Day Master's stem finds no root (本气 or 余气) in any Earthly Branch. For example, a Jia Wood Day Master would have no Yin, Mao, Hai, or Wei branches in the chart.
  2. Warlord Controls the Entire Situation: The Month Branch (the Earthly Branch of the birth month) is itself a Warlord, or the Earthly Branches combine to form a powerful Officer-Warlord structure (e.g., for a Wood Day Master, the branches Shen, You, and Xu form a strong Metal combination). The Warlord holds an overwhelming advantage in both quantity and momentum.
  3. Life Support is Cut Off: The Four Pillars contain absolutely no Mentor (印) star that can generate the Day Master (e.g., no Water for a Wood Day Master), and absolutely no Peer (比肩) or Rival (劫财) that can support the Day Master (e.g., no other Jia or Yi Wood for a Wood Day Master).
  4. No Power to Control the Warlord: The chart contains absolutely no Talent (食神) or Maverick (伤官) that can restrain the Warlord (e.g., no Fire for a Metal Warlord).
  5. Wealth Star is Welcome: The presence of a Wealth star (the element generated by the Warlord, e.g., Earth for a Metal Warlord) that generates the Warlord makes the pattern purer and more powerful. • Characteristics of a False Follow Warlord Pattern:

  1. Day Master Retains a Faint Trace of Strength: The Day Master has a weak root in an Earthly Branch, or there is a floating, powerless Mentor, Peer, Rival, Talent, or Maverick in the Heavenly Stems that cannot provide substantial help.
  2. Impure Pattern, Awaiting Luck to Activate: Although the Warlord's momentum still dominates the situation, the pattern has the "flaws" mentioned above. It requires a specific Luck Cycle (大运) or Annual Cycle (流年) to combine with or overcome this faint "root cause" (Mentor, Peer, Talent, Maverick). Only then can the pattern become pure and trigger wealth and nobility.

Note: The distinction between "True" and "False" does not directly determine the quality of one's fate. Instead, it describes the purity of the pattern and the different paths to achievement. A True Follower has a clear, innate advantage. A False Follower has a slightly mixed pattern, and their success depends more heavily on precise alignment and refinement through later luck cycles.

The Internal Logic of the Pattern and Its Reflection in Life

People whose charts form the Follow Warlord Pattern often have life scripts deeply intertwined with "pressure" and "power." Because they "follow" the Warlord, which represents authority, challenge, crisis, and rules, they possess an innate instinct to survive and rise under high pressure. If a Luck Cycle or Annual Cycle reverses the situation and injects strength into the weak Day Master (e.g., through the appearance of a Mentor or Peer/Rival), causing it to "rebel" against the Warlord, the pattern collapses instantly. At this point, it can easily trigger severe legal troubles, imprisonment, or even physical harm.

Favorable and Unfavorable Gods for the Pattern

• Favorable Gods (喜神/用神):

  1. Wealth Star (财星): This is the most favorable god for the pattern. The Wealth star generates the Warlord, providing a continuous supply of resources and support to this powerful force, making the "following" relationship more stable and meaningful. It signifies both wealth and nobility, with a deep and solid career foundation.
  2. Officer/Warlord (官杀): When a Luck Cycle or Annual Cycle brings more Officer or Warlord energy (i.e., the Warlord and the Executive), it further aligns with the pattern's dominant force and is considered auspicious. It represents increased authority, elevated status, and the acquisition of greater real power.

• Unfavorable Gods (忌神):

  1. Talent/Maverick (食神/伤官): This is the greatest taboo, as it breaks the pattern. Talent and Maverick directly restrain and challenge the Warlord, which is the core of the pattern. This act is called "offending the dominant force" (犯旺) and immediately triggers a backlash from the pattern. It signifies career collapse, loss of position, and even severe punishment or disaster.
  2. Mentor/Peer/Rival (印绶/比肩劫财): This is the second greatest taboo. The Mentor generates the Day Master, and Peers/Rivals support it. This gives the originally compliant Day Master the idea of independence and rebellion, leading to a direct conflict with the Warlord. This also breaks the pattern, and disaster will strike quickly.

Classical Text Commentary

"San Ming Tong Hui" (三命通会)

The "Du Bu" (独步) says: "To abandon one's life and follow the Warlord, one must meet the Warlord in assembly. Following Wealth avoids the Warlord; following the Warlord welcomes Wealth. If one meets a root, life is lost without doubt." This means that in the Follow Warlord Pattern, because the Warlord spirit is too heavy and the self has nowhere to return, one has no choice but to follow. One must travel to a place where the Warlord is strong and Wealth is abundant, and the Four Pillars must have not a single point of Peer or Mentor to be considered. If one encounters a luck cycle that supports the self and makes it strong, making it an enemy of the Warlord, the following of the Warlord is not single-minded, thus causing disaster.

The classic says: "Abandoning one's life to follow the Warlord discusses hardness and softness." This means abandoning the Heavenly Stem and following the Earthly Branch. Following the nature of the Five Elements, Yin stems that follow a pure Warlord in the Earthly Branches are mostly noble. This is because Yin is soft and can follow things. Yang stems that follow a pure Warlord in the Earthly Branches are also noble, but their rank is lower than Yin stems, because Yang stems are not easily controlled. Water, Fire, Metal, and Earth can all follow, but only Yang Wood cannot follow. Dead wood receives the axe and is harmed by it.

The "You Yuan" (幽元) says: "When the self is too weak and the Warlord is too heavy, one's fame spreads across the land."

The "Yuan Li Fu" (元理赋) says: "One is wealthy and noble all one's life, all because the Warlord is heavy and the self is soft. In the middle of the road, one may die or be in danger, only because luck supports the stem and makes it strong." It also says: "When there are many ghosts, there is no ghost; instead, it is not considered inauspicious."

An ancient song says: "When the five Yang stems sit on the day and all meet the Warlord, abandoning one's life to follow, one's life span is not long. If the five Yin stems meet this place, with a weak body and a strong Warlord, it is auspicious to speak."

Another song says: "The Western Metal position sits in softness, not afraid of rest, not afraid of imprisonment. When the ghost and Warlord are strong and generate, one will have much fortune, and fame and achievement will urge one to ascend to the fairy island."

Modern Interpretation: The "Du Bu" clarifies the key to forming the Follow Warlord Pattern: the Earthly Branches must combine to form a powerful Warlord structure. It also contrasts the likes and dislikes of the Follow Wealth and Follow Warlord patterns. The core is that the Day Master has no place to rely on due to the excessive Warlord and must follow out of necessity. To achieve this pattern, one needs a Luck Cycle that goes to a place where the Warlord is strong or Wealth is abundant, and the original chart must absolutely have no Peers or Mentors. If a Luck Cycle supports the Day Master, making it strong and causing it to fight the Warlord, the intention to follow is not single-minded, and disaster will surely occur.

The discussion of "hardness and softness" reveals the subtle differences between Yin and Yang Day Masters in this pattern. Yin stems (like Yi, Ding, Ji, Xin, Gui) are soft and can better align with the Warlord's energy in the Earthly Branches, so their nobility is more pronounced when the pattern is formed. Yang stems (like Jia, Bing, Wu, Geng, Ren) can also achieve nobility, but because their nature is strong, their degree of submission is slightly less, so their level is somewhat lower. Among the Five Elements, Water, Fire, Metal, and Earth Day Masters can all form this pattern, but Yang Wood (Jia) does not easily truly follow, as it is like dead wood that, when cut by a strong axe (strong Metal), risks being damaged.

The "You Yuan" and "Yuan Li Fu" describe the results and risks of this pattern: when the pattern is formed, one can become famous and extremely wealthy and noble due to this extreme "heavy Warlord, soft self." However, the risk of death or danger in the middle of life comes precisely from a Luck Cycle that supports the Day Master, causing the pattern to break. The saying "when there are many ghosts, there is no ghost" means that when the Warlord is so strong that it reaches an extreme, it forms a kind of balance and single-minded force, and it is no longer considered inauspicious.

The ancient songs use comparisons and metaphors to deepen understanding: when a Yang Day Master encounters the Warlord everywhere, even if it follows, its foundation is not as stable as a Yin Day Master. For a Day Master of Metal (Geng or Xin), if it sits in a soft, rootless position, as long as the Warlord (ghost/official) is strong and can generate the Mentor, one need not fear temporary low luck; instead, it can drive fame and achievement, straight to the clouds.

• BaZi: Xin Si, Xin Chou, Yi You, Yi You In this chart, the Day Master is Yi Wood, born in the month of Chou (a Wealth star month). The Earthly Branches Si, You, and Chou closely combine to form a powerful Metal structure (Warlord structure). The Heavenly Stems also both reveal Xin Metal, the Warlord. The momentum of Metal (Warlord) in the entire chart is overwhelming and unstoppable.
