Flying Wealth (飞财): The BaZi Secret to Wealth Through Hidden Clashes

Among the many special patterns in BaZi (八字), the Flying Wealth (飞财) pattern stands out for its unique approach to wealth acquisition. Instead of relying on wealth stars clearly visible in the birth chart, this pattern uses a dynamic "hidden clash" between earthly branches to "fly" wealth from the opposite palace into the chart for the Day Master's use. Because this wealth is not inherent in the chart but "flown" in by external force, it is called Flying Wealth. The key to success lies in whether the Day Master is strong enough to bear this "windfall." The classic text San Ming Tong Hui (三命通会) states: "Those who attain this pattern shall gain wealth and rank. Beware of energy leakage, which brings misfortune."

How to Identify the Flying Wealth Pattern

The primary prerequisite for forming the Flying Wealth pattern is that no wealth star appears in the four pillars of the chart. The pattern is established when two or more identical earthly branches appear in the chart, forming a combined force to clash with their opposite palace, thereby activating the hidden wealth star within that palace for the Day Master's use.

Let's understand the mechanism through classic examples from ancient texts:

  • Shen (申) Clashes with Yin (寅) to Obtain Wealth: This applies primarily to Ren (壬) Day individuals. Ren Water's wealth stars are Bing Fire (Venturer) and Ding Fire (Earner). If the chart contains two or three Shen (Monkey) branches, they can collectively clash with the opposite palace Yin (Tiger), forcing out the hidden Bing Fire (Venturer) within Yin to serve as the Day Master's wealth source.
  • Yin (寅) Clashes with Shen (申) to Obtain Wealth: This applies primarily to Wu (戊) Day individuals. Wu Earth's wealth stars are Ren Water (Venturer) and Gui Water (Earner). If the chart contains two or three Yin (Tiger) branches, they can collectively clash with the opposite palace Shen (Monkey), forcing out the hidden Ren Water (Venturer) within Shen.
  • Si (巳) Clashes with Hai (亥) to Obtain Wealth: Ancient texts often mention Jia (甲) Day or Yi (乙) Day for this. Jia and Yi Wood take Earth as wealth. This is an extension of the principle, not the most typical application. A more common use is for Bing or Ding Day Masters, where Si Fire clashes with Hai Water to extract the hidden Gui Water Executive (官星), forming the "Inverted Clash for Rank" pattern.
  • Hai (亥) Clashes with Si (巳) to Obtain Wealth: Ancient texts often mention Geng (庚) Day or Xin (辛) Day for this. Geng and Xin Metal take Wood as wealth. Similarly, this is a principle extension; classic cases more often involve Geng or Xin Day Masters, where Hai Water clashes with Si Fire to extract the hidden Bing Fire Executive, forming the "Flying Rank and Wealth" pattern.

Key Conditions for Pattern Formation: The earthly branches acting as the "clashing force" must be numerous and concentrated in power. Additionally, they must not be combined with other branches (e.g., Shen combining with Zi and Chen to form a Water combination). If combined, they "forget to clash due to the combination," losing the power to strike wealth, and the pattern cannot form.

Deeper Meaning of the Pattern

Individuals with the Flying Wealth pattern typically possess a strong sense of adventure and keen speculative instincts. They excel at seizing opportunities outside conventional paths, often gaining unexpected wealth or reaping huge profits through high-risk maneuvers. This pattern symbolizes a dynamic, proactive, and even aggressive approach to wealth acquisition. The Day Master is often unsatisfied with stable income, daring to break norms and seize wealth amidst fierce competition or market fluctuations.

If the pattern is purely formed and the Day Master is strong, it often indicates the potential for "windfall" wealth, substantial assets, and sudden riches. However, the pattern's drawbacks are equally prominent: it inherently carries extreme instability and high risk. If the Day Master is weak and lacks a solid foundation, they cannot control this "flown-in" wealth energy and will instead be burdened by it, leading to disasters. At best, money comes and goes quickly; at worst, it may trigger lawsuits, injuries, or even greater calamities. Thus, the wealth curve in such lives tends to be volatile and unstable.

Favorable and Unfavorable Conditions

  • Favorable Conditions:
    1. Strong Day Master: This is the foremost condition. The Day Master must have a solid foundation, supported by Mentor (印) stars or assisted by Peer/Rival (比劫), to bear and control the powerful wealth star that is clashed out.
    2. Numerous Clashing Branches: The more earthly branches initiating the clash, and the stronger their power, the more abundant the energy of the clashed-out wealth star, indicating potentially greater wealth.
    3. Flowing Talent/Maverick: If the chart has excessive Peer/Rival, it is best to have Talent (食神) or Maverick (伤官) stars. These can drain the excessive Peer/Rival energy while simultaneously generating the clashed-out wealth star, allowing the chart's energy to flow smoothly and the wealth to have a proper归宿 (归宿).
  • Unfavorable Conditions:
    1. Wealth Star Filled In: This is the primary taboo that destroys the pattern. If the wealth star or its "throne" (e.g., Bing Fire sees Si) appears directly in the heavenly stems or earthly branches of the four pillars, the target of the "hidden clash" disappears, and the pattern is immediately broken.
    2. Clashing Branch Combined: If the earthly branch initiating the clash is bound by a three-combination or six-combination with other branches in the chart, it will "forget to clash due to the combination," losing its clashing momentum. The pattern cannot activate, and there is no way to seek wealth.
    3. Day Master Leaks Energy: If the Day Master is inherently weak, or if the chart has excessive Warlord (七杀) overcoming the self or excessive Talent/Maverick draining the self, the pattern breaks. A weak self cannot bear wealth. For the Flying Wealth pattern, this means "the door to wealth is open, but I lack the fortune to enjoy it, and instead incur disgrace," indicating danger.

Excerpt from Ancient Text

San Ming Tong Hui (三命通会)

When the Day Stem matches the Month Stem, and the Day Branch matches the Hour Branch, this structure can clash out the wealth star from the opposite palace, forming the Flying Wealth pattern. Those who attain this pattern shall gain wealth and rank. Beware of energy leakage, which brings misfortune. For example, a Ren Shen day born with a Shen hour branch—two Shen branches clash out the Jia Wood (Talent) and Bing Fire (Venturer) hidden in Yin for use. If the Luck Cycle or Annual Cycle encounters Zi, Shen-Zi-Chen forms a Water combination. If the Day Stem is Geng Metal at that time, the Water combination leaks the Metal's energy, and the Maverick (Water) cannot generate wealth (Wood). If the Annual Cycle or original chart then encounters Warlord (Fire) to overcome the self, the person may face death. This is because the earthly branches of the Flying Wealth pattern must not transform into other elemental combinations. For example, the chart: Wu Yin, Ji Wei, Wu Yin, Jia Yin—three Yin and one Jia Warlord. Born in the sixth month (Wei, Earth month), the chart has no sign of wealth (Water), and the Peer (Earth) is very strong. However, the brilliance of this pattern lies in its ability to use the power of three Yin branches to clash out the long-life Water (wealth) hidden in the opposite palace Shen. When the Luck Cycle moves to Northwest (Metal-Water prosperous direction), one can accumulate vast wealth.
