Well Rope Pattern (井栏斜叉): Using Water as a Blade to Secretly Seize the Official Star
In the system of BaZi (八字) patterns, there is a special configuration known as the "Well Rope Pattern" (井栏斜叉). It does not rely on openly visible official stars, wealth stars, or mentor stars to achieve nobility. Instead, it attains fame and status through a clever mechanism of "hidden clashing" (暗冲). Its imagery is drawn from a "well railing" — three Geng (庚) Metals surrounding it like the rim of a well; and a "slanting fork" — the Shen-Zi-Chen (申子辰) Water Bureau converging to form the water within the well. The core of this pattern lies in using the extremely abundant, nourishing water force in the birth chart to clash against the empty Fire Bureau (寅午戌 Yin-Wu-Xu) on the opposite side of the compass, thereby "clashing out" an official star for the Geng Metal Day Master, thus achieving a noble configuration. The ancient text Xi Ji Pian (喜忌篇) states: "When a Geng Day encounters the complete Water Bureau, it is taboo to have Bing, Ding, Si, or Wu in the pillars."
Constituent Requirements of the Pattern
The conditions for this pattern to form are extremely strict: The Day Pillar must be one of Geng Shen (庚申), Geng Zi (庚子), or Geng Chen (庚辰); the Earthly Branches must completely gather Shen, Zi, and Chen to form a Water Bureau; the Heavenly Stems should ideally reveal three Geng Metals; and the four pillars must absolutely not contain any official or killing stars (Fire) or mentor stars (Earth).
A detailed breakdown is as follows:
- Day Pillar Foundation: The Day Master must be Geng Metal, and its Sitting Branch must be one of Shen, Zi, or Chen. This means the Day Master itself carries a key branch of the Water Bureau, laying the foundation for the pattern's formation.
- Earthly Branch Triad: The Earthly Branches of the chart must gather Shen, Zi, and Chen completely. None can be missing, thereby forming a powerful and pure Water Bureau (the "Nourishing Water" pattern), which is the energy source for initiating the "hidden clash."
- Three Geng in Heavenly Stems: The Heavenly Stems (including the Day Stem) should ideally feature three Geng Metals. Geng is Yang Metal, and three Geng Metals resemble the three railings of a well mouth, forming the "well railing" imagery. Simultaneously, Metal generates Water, providing an inexhaustible source for the vast Water Bureau, creating an auspicious image of "White Metal and Clear Water."
- No Official or Killing Stars (Avoid Filling the Void): The four pillars must absolutely not contain characters belonging to the Fire element, such as Bing (丙), Ding (丁), Si (巳), or Wu (午). The nobility of this pattern lies in the "hidden clash" against the empty Fire to create an official star. If Fire appears (is "filled in") in the chart, there is no need for the clash, the mechanism of the hidden clash ceases to exist, and the pattern is immediately broken.
- No Mentor Stars (Avoid Restricting Water): The four pillars should also not contain characters belonging to the Earth element, such as Wu (戊), Ji (己), Chen (辰), Xu (戌), Chou (丑), or Wei (未). Earth can restrict Water, directly suppressing and clogging the Shen-Zi-Chen Water Bureau, which is the foundation of the pattern, robbing it of its power to clash the Fire Bureau and greatly diminishing its noble aura.
Deeper Meaning of the Pattern
Those who enter this pattern have a temperament like the water in a deep well — calm on the surface, but profound and distant within. They possess exceptional wisdom and a noble, pure character. Because the pattern uses its own abundant Talent and Maverick stars (the Water Bureau) as a tool to secretly seek official nobility, the native often has a unique way of thinking, is resourceful, and excels at achieving goals and gaining status through indirect, ingenious strategies. They are particularly suited for fields requiring deep thought, strategic planning, and fair judgment, such as the judiciary, supervision, strategic consulting, high-level advisory roles, or academic research.
If the pattern is pure and unbroken, it indicates a person of "pure, unique nobility and prominence," capable of gaining high reputation and status in their profession or within the system. However, it is important to note that the nobility obtained through this pattern is often "pure nobility" (清贵), meaning eminence in reputation and status, rather than directly pointing to immense material wealth. Furthermore, because the conditions for the pattern's formation are so strict, once it is broken, the pent-up energy of the Water Bureau, which was ready to surge, may turn into a raging flood. This portends a life of instability, difficulty in showcasing one's talents, and a heart often filled with loneliness and bitterness.
Favorable and Unfavorable Gods for the Pattern
-
Favorable Gods (所喜):
- Water on the Heavenly Stems (Ren, Gui 壬、癸): The appearance of Ren Water or Gui Water on the Heavenly Stems can directly activate and manifest the power of the Earthly Branch Water Bureau, making the Talent/Maverick energy clearer and stronger, enhancing its ability to clash the Fire Bureau opposite, and giving the pattern more momentum.
- Wood Luck in the East (Yin, Mao 寅、卯): When the Luck Cycle moves into the Eastern Wood direction, it is the best. Geng Metal uses Wood as its Wealth star. At this time, the powerful Water Bureau (Talent/Maverick) generates the Wealth star, forming an excellent configuration of "Talent/Maverick Generating Wealth." This often brings a situation of both nobility and wealth, a key to elevating the pattern's level.
- Water Luck in the North (Hai, Zi 亥、子): When the Luck Cycle moves into the Northern Water direction, it is the prosperous realm of the Talent/Maverick star, further strengthening the core power of the pattern itself. During this period, the native's talents can be fully displayed, and they can easily gain fame.
-
Unfavorable Gods (所忌):
- Fire Luck in the South (Si, Wu 巳、午): This is the number one taboo for the pattern. When the Luck Cycle enters the Southern Fire direction, it is equivalent to directly "filling in" the official/killing star (Fire) that was supposed to be secretly clashed, completely destroying the premise of the hidden clash. This can lead to major obstacles in one's career and easily attract disputes and legal troubles.
- Strong Earth Luck (Wu, Ji, Chen, Xu, Chou, Wei 戊、己、辰、戌、丑、未): Strong Earth luck is unfavorable. Earth restricts the Water Bureau, like using mud to block a well mouth, suppressing the source of living water. The native's talents and noble aura will be greatly diminished.
- Breaking the Bureau with Branches (Yin, Wu, Xu 寅、午、戌): If the chart or the Annual Cycle/Luck Cycle directly introduces Yin, Wu, and Xu, especially forming a complete Fire Bureau, it will create a direct "Water-Fire Battle" with the Shen-Zi-Chen Water Bureau. This not only destroys the delicate balance of the hidden clash but also triggers intense internal conflict, breaking the pattern. This primarily indicates turmoil in career and family, leading to harm instead of benefit.
Summary of Classical Texts
San Ming Tong Hui (三命通会)
Xi Ji Pian says: "When a Geng Day encounters the complete Nourishing Water (润下), it is taboo to have the direction of Bing, Ding, Si, or Wu. When the Hour Pillar meets Zi or Shen, its fortune is halved." This pattern primarily uses the days Geng Shen, Geng Zi, and Geng Chen. The Earthly Branches form a Water Bureau, and the Heavenly Stems reveal three Geng, which is called the complete Nourishing Water. Geng uses Ding as its official star. By using Shen-Zi-Chen to clash the Yin-Wu-Xu Fire Bureau, the Geng Day obtains an official star, which is nobility. Bing and Ding make the official/killing star manifest; Si and Wu fill the well mouth. If the Heavenly Stems have Ren or Gui characters, they lead Shen-Zi-Chen as the Maverick star to remove the power of Yin-Wu-Xu Fire. Wu and Ji characters restrict the Water Bureau, preventing it from clashing Yin-Wu-Xu Fire, thus reducing the nobility. The same applies to the Luck Cycle and Annual Cycle.
The Well Rope is the well mouth. Nourishing Water is water. The well contains water to help people; seeing Wu or Wei fill it in, the water becomes mixed with Earth, losing its power to help. If the Month Pillar is Yin-Wu-Xu, it clashes and breaks the pattern, causing Water and Fire to fight, bringing disaster instead. This pattern requires not a single point of Fire in the pillars. Being born in Autumn or Winter is ideal for forming the bureau. Seeing Wu Chen or Wu Zi is acceptable.
If Geng Zi sees another Zi in the Hour Pillar, it should be treated as the "Flying Horse Dew" pattern; if in the Chen month, treat it as the Mentor pattern; if in the Zi month, treat it as the Maverick pattern. One must adapt and discern. If it truly matches this pattern, it indicates a person of pure, unique nobility and prominence, but not necessarily great wealth. Luck is favorable towards the East (Wealth), favorable towards the North (Maverick), unfavorable towards the South (Fire, Earth), and average towards the West (Metal). For example, the chart of Commander Wang Tong: Geng Zi, Geng Chen, Geng Shen, Ding Chou. In the Ding Mao year, he was stationed at the border and received ten official promotions. Another example is the chart of Zhuangyuan (Top Scholar) Yin Feng: Gui Wei, Geng Shen, Geng Shen, Geng Chen. He was experiencing Eastern Wood luck, so his official position was prominent. This is a pure example of this pattern.
A verse says: "For the Well Rope Nourishing Water pattern, three Geng are excellent, Wealth and Mentor are pleasing. Avoid the noon position of the Li trigram, and delight in the Yin character inviting the spirit. Filling it in brings glory and wealth, carrying a blade allows commanding a thousand troops." Considering this carefully, Geng uses Earth as its Mentor, but Earth can fill the well mouth. Yin can clash Shen, harming the useful god. How can this be noble? One must ponder this. A poem says: "When a Geng Day fully encounters Shen, Zi, Chen, the Well Rope pattern emerges, surpassing the masses. If Bing, Ding, Yin, and Wu are completely absent, you are surely a noble person in a prosperous dynasty." Another poem: "For the Well Rope pattern, a Geng Day with Shen, Zi, Chen, the pattern is only complete when there are many Geng. The greatest fear is Yin, Wu, Xu breaking the bureau; meeting Bing or Ding is also ruthless." Another poem: "The Well Rope pattern's luck delights in the Eastern direction; reaching the Wealth realm brings true nobility and riches. If the years or luck cycles encounter Bing, Ding, Si, or Wu, you will lose your position and wealth, and must be fearful." Another poem: "When a Geng Day encounters the complete Shen, Zi, Chen, the Well Rope pattern controls the official star. If there is no Fire in the bureau, it is noble; if the pillar is broken, disaster has arrived." Another poem: "Born meeting three Geng, a joyful new aura; the complete Nourishing Water is the true Well Rope. The essence of Metal fears Yin, Wu, Xu; the beauty of Water favors Shen, Zi, Chen. The nobility is harmed by seeing many Ren or Gui; the official star should not neighbor Bing or Ding. The Luck Cycle is generally beautiful in the East; a lifetime of glory without poverty."
Modern Interpretation: Xi Ji Pian points out that when a Geng Day Stem forms a Water Bureau with its Earthly Branches (Nourishing Water), it is most taboo for the chart to contain Bing, Ding, Si, or Wu, which belong to the Fire element. If the Hour Pillar sees a specific combination, the fortune is also weakened. This pattern is specifically based on the three days Geng Shen, Geng Zi, and Geng Chen. The Earthly Branches must form a Shen-Zi-Chen Water Bureau, and the Heavenly Stems should reveal three Geng for perfection. Geng Metal uses Ding Fire as its official star. The beauty of this pattern lies in using the power of the Shen-Zi-Chen Water Bureau to clash against the Yin-Wu-Xu Fire Bureau on its opposite side (180 degrees apart), thereby "clashing out" an official star for the Geng Metal Day Master, thus obtaining nobility. If the chart directly shows Bing or Ding Fire, the official/killing star is already manifest, and there is no need for the clash. If it shows Si or Wu Fire, it is like filling the well mouth, and the pattern is broken. If the Heavenly Stems have Ren or Gui Water, they can successfully activate the Water Bureau as a Maverick star to restrict Fire. If there is Wu or Ji Earth, it will restrict the Water Bureau, making it unable to clash Fire, and the noble aura will naturally decrease.
The Well Rope metaphorically refers to the well mouth. Nourishing Water refers to the Water element. When there is water in the well, it can nourish all things. If characters like Wu or Wei (Fire, Earth) appear to fill it in, the clear water is disturbed, losing its power to benefit the world. If the Month Pillar is Yin-Wu-Xu, it directly clashes with the Water Bureau, causing Water and Fire to fight, inviting disaster. This pattern requires the four pillars to have no Fire energy at all. Being born in Autumn (Metal) or Winter (Water), when these elements are strong, is most suitable. Seeing Wu Chen or Wu Zi (because Wu has a combining relationship with Zi and Chen) is not a major problem.
If a Geng Zi Day is also born in a Zi Hour, it should be prioritized as the "Flying Horse Dew" pattern. If born in a Chen month, treat it as the Mentor pattern. If born in a Zi month, treat it as the Maverick pattern. One must be flexible in judgment. Those who truly form this pattern are of a pure, unique character and prominent status, but their wealth accumulation may not be substantial. The Luck Cycle favors the East (Wood, Wealth) and the North (Water, Maverick's prosperous place), and dislikes the South (Fire, Earth). The West (Metal) is average. For example, Commander Wang Tong's chart: Geng Zi, Geng Chen, Geng Shen, Ding Chou. In the Ding Mao year, while guarding the border, he received multiple promotions. Another example is the chart of Top Scholar and General Yin Feng: Gui Wei, Geng Shen, Geng Shen, Geng Chen. Because he was experiencing Eastern Wood luck, his official position was prominent. This is a relatively pure example of this pattern.
An ancient verse said: "For the Well Rope Nourishing Water pattern, three Geng are excellent, and seeing Wealth or Mentor is also pleasing. Avoid the Wu Fire position, and delight in Yin Wood coming to clash Shen and invite combination." One must contemplate this: Geng Metal uses Earth as its Mentor, but Earth fills the well mouth. Yin Wood can clash Shen Metal, seemingly harming the foundation of the Water Bureau. How can this be noble? It is worth deep consideration.
Ancient poems say: "When a Geng Day's branches gather Shen, Zi, Chen, entering the Well Rope pattern surpasses the masses. If Bing, Ding, Yin, and Wu are completely absent, you are surely a prominent person in the court." "For the Well Rope pattern, a Geng Day with Shen, Zi, Chen, the pattern is only true when there are many Geng. The greatest fear is Yin, Wu, Xu breaking the bureau; meeting Bing or Ding is also ruthless." "The Well Rope pattern's luck delights in the East; stepping into the Wealth realm brings long-lasting riches. If the years or luck cycles encounter Bing, Ding, Si, or Wu, losing your position and wealth must be guarded against." "When a Geng Day Stem meets the complete Shen, Zi, Chen, the Well Rope pattern subdues the official. If there is no Fire in the bureau, it is noble; if the Month Pillar is clashed, disaster comes." "A chart with three Geng has a joyful new aura; the Earthly Branches' Nourishing Water is the true Well Rope. The essence of Metal fears Yin, Wu, Xu; the beauty of Water favors Shen, Zi, Chen. The nobility of the Maverick is due to Ren and Gui leading; the official star must not neighbor Bing and Ding. The Luck Cycle is always beautiful in the East; a lifetime of glory without worrying about poverty."
