In the realm of BaZi special patterns, there exists a unique path that does not follow conventional routes. Instead, it uses the intense "punishment" (刑) action between Earthly Branches to "pry open" the door to official rank from hidden places, then stabilizes it through a distant "combination" (合). This is the Punishment-Combination to Rank pattern, also known as the Punishment-Rank pattern. Its core principle is that the chart lacks an apparent Executive (正官) star, yet through a specific combination, it actively and forcefully awakens hidden nobility and claims it for oneself. As the classical text Xi Ji Pian states: "For a Gui day born in the Yin hour, the Year and Month fear the Wu and Ji directions."

Pattern Composition Requirements

The standard model for this pattern is: Day Pillar is Gui Water, Hour Pillar is Jia Yin. The pattern relies on the Hour Branch 'Yin' to 'punish' the 'Si' position, thereby drawing out the hidden Wu Earth Executive star. Then, the presence of 'You' or 'Chou' in the chart must remotely combine with it for the pattern to be considered established.

Specific composition conditions are as follows:

• Day and Hour Framework: The birth day must be one of the six Gui days (Gui Chou, Gui Hai, Gui You, Gui Wei, Gui Si, Gui Mao), and the birth hour's Earthly Branch must be Yin (Jia Yin hour).
• Executive and Warlord Must Be Hidden: The entire chart's Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches must absolutely not contain Wu Earth or Ji Earth. Once the Executive or Warlord appears, the pattern is broken.
• Foundation Avoids Clash: The Earthly Branch Shen should not appear. A Yin-Shen Clash directly impacts the Yin Wood, which is the key to activating the pattern. The Heavenly Stem Geng should also not appear, as it restrains Jia Wood, weakening Yin Wood's power.
• Action Avoids Bondage: The Earthly Branches Hai, Wu, and Xu should not appear. These three characters combine with Yin Wood (Hai-Yin combines into Wood, Wu-Yin-Xu form a Fire Combination), causing Yin to "forget punishment due to combination," losing its ability to punish.
• Target Avoids Fulfillment: The Earthly Branch Si should not directly appear. If Si is already present, there is no need to "punish" to draw it out, and the logic of this pattern collapses.
• Key to Pattern Formation: The chart must contain either You or Chou. This character's function is to remotely combine with the "punished-out" Si Fire, thereby locking in the drawn-out noble energy. With punishment but no combination, the noble energy is like rootless duckweed, difficult to retain.

Pattern Characteristics and Life Reflection

Those who enter this pattern are often resolute and courageous, possessing a pioneering spirit and strong executive power. Because the method of obtaining status is through "punishment," it symbolizes the need to compete, challenge rules, and even undergo a series of struggles and conflicts to reach a high position. The Day Master is usually unafraid of difficulties, excels at breaking through complex situations, and can wield power with a strong hand. Therefore, they often thrive in fields requiring decisive action and strong execution, such as judiciary, discipline inspection, military, police, and surgical medicine.

Those with a pure pattern can achieve great nobility and fame. However, "punishment" itself carries the imagery of injury and conflict. If the pattern combination is poor or the Day Master is weak, the person may easily become embroiled in disputes and lawsuits throughout life, or make many enemies due to an overly rigid style, leading to significant life ups and downs. Their path to success is often accompanied by necessary struggles and costs.

Pattern's Favorable and Unfavorable Gods

• Favorable:

  1. Wealth and Mentor Support: It is favorable to see the Wealth Star (Fire element) and the Mentor (正印) (Metal element). Wealth can generate the punished-out Executive star, giving it a source; the Mentor can support the Day Master Gui Water, making it strong enough to handle the obtained nobility, leading to deeper and more lasting blessings.
  2. Strong Day Master: The Gui Water Day Master must be strong by season or with support. Only a strong self can bear and control the power obtained through such intense means. A weak self is like a child wielding a large sword, easily causing self-harm.
  3. You-Chou Combine Nobility: Having You or Chou in the chart is the key to forming the pattern, ensuring the "fruit of victory" is not taken away, stabilizing the pattern structure.

• Unfavorable:

  1. Executive/Warlord Fulfillment: The appearance of Wu, Ji, or Si in the chart or in the Luck Cycle/Annual Cycle is the primary taboo for breaking the pattern. It means the official position has been taken by others, or the person is prone to downfall due to legal troubles.
  2. Shen/Geng Breaks Pattern: The appearance of Shen or Geng in the chart or in the Luck Cycle/Annual Cycle directly clashes or restrains the key Yin Wood, shaking the pattern's foundation, causing plans to fail, or even inviting unexpected disasters.
  3. Combination Bondage Loses Function: The appearance of Hai, Wu, or Xu in the chart or in the Luck Cycle/Annual Cycle binds Yin Wood, causing the Day Master to lose their aggressive drive and action power, become complacent, and thus miss out on nobility.

"San Ming Tong Hui"

The Xi Ji Pian says: "For a Gui day born in the Yin hour, the Year and Month fear the Wu and Ji directions." This pattern primarily focuses on the Gui day. Gui uses Wu Earth as its Executive star, and Wu's Fortune God (禄神) is in Si. The Hour Pillar Jia Yin punishes out the Wu Earth hidden in Si, thus Gui obtains its Executive star. It is favorable to see Wealth stars, or if Mentor assists, or if the Luck Cycle involves Wealth or Mentor, or punishment, clash, combination, or meeting — all are beautiful. The Year and Month's stems and branches fear seeing Wu or Ji characters; if the Executive or Warlord is exposed, the pattern's quality is reduced. If the Luck Cycle or Annual Cycle fulfills this, or if the fortune has passed, then death may occur. If the Pillar has Wu or Ji characters, the Hour Pillar is fortunate to encounter Void (空亡). If the Month Command is in the Executive or Warlord position, then it is not discussed according to the Hour's likes and dislikes. For example, Gui Hai, Gui Mao, Gui Wei days, with a Wood Bureau below, and the Hour encountering Jia Yin, if the Pillar has Wu, Ji, Si, or Wu, it is truly "Maverick sees Executive" (伤官见官), and does not enter this pattern; encountering it in the Luck Cycle or Annual Cycle brings disaster. This pattern is largely similar to the "Flying Horse to Rank" (飞天禄马) pattern.

Since it is called "Clash for Executive," it should also have a combination. If the Pillar obtains You or Chou to combine with Si, it is acceptable. Only avoid Shen, because Shen can clash and restrain Yin. Seeing Hai, Wu, or Xu characters is bondage; seeing Si is fulfillment; seeing Shen or Geng is clash or restraint — these are all breakages, not noble. It is also said: "Six Gui days can also use the Geng Shen hour, punishing and combining to obtain the Wu Fortune God in Si as the Executive. Six Ji days can also use the Ren Shen hour, punishing out the Jia Wood Fortune God in Yin as the Executive. Six Xin days encountering the Geng Yin hour cannot form the punishment. Although Xin uses Bing as its Executive star, its Fortune God is in Si, Geng can restrain Jia, the Yin character is injured, cannot punish Si, Xin cannot obtain its Executive star, so it is not taken." The Ju Shan Pian says: "If the Punishment-Combination is born in the first month, it is directly treated as a Maverick pattern." It also says: "If the Pillar encounters You or Chou characters, the person is a hero and celebrity."

A poem says: "Six Gui days born in the Jia Yin hour, called Punishment-Combination is not necessarily true. If the Month Command adds Yin or Hai positions, it should be examined within the Maverick pattern." Another: "Only seek Gui day Jia Yin hour, punishing out the Executive star, nobility can be known. Dislike Geng Metal injuring Jia Wood, Yin-Shen clash and break brings worry and danger." Another: "Gui day without Executive, hour Jia Yin, Si's Bing and Wu need Yin's punishment. Jia can restrain Wu, Bing comes out, Gui obtains Wealth and Executive, rank and nobility achieved. Four Pillars without Wu and Ji, then qualified for great fame. Geng comes as Warlord, can injure Jia, even with wealth, a commoner." Another: "Punishment-Combination pattern seeks among six Gui, birth hour likes Jia Yin to come. Yin comes to punish Si, Wu should come out, Gui goes to meet Snake, Executive obtained. If Wu or Ji appear, disaster easily arrives; if Geng or Shen suddenly encounter, disaster hard to avoid. Luck Cycle similar to Flying Horse pattern, what is avoided is no injury, fortune deeper." For example, Grand Secretary Gao Gong's chart: Ren Shen, Gui Chou, Gui Chou, Jia Yin. The Pillar contains Shen, which is a defect. When the Luck Cycle reached Geng Shen, encountering the Ren Shen Annual Cycle, he was dismissed from office, barely avoiding great disaster.

All the above patterns of remote combination, hidden punishment, flying clash, etc., originate from the 18 ancient patterns. They are used only when the Pillar originally has no apparent Wealth or Executive. In a person's destiny, if the Four Pillars and Three Elements have no combination internally, but there is a combination in another position, inviting remotely, hiding and arching, punishment, clash, break, restraint, combining to another Fortune God, these patterns apply. If there is punishment but no combination, the noble energy cannot stay, and the pattern is not formed.

Modern Interpretation: The Xi Ji Pian points out that for a Gui day person born in the Yin hour, the Year and Month Pillars most fear seeing Wu or Ji Earth. This pattern primarily focuses on the Gui day. Gui Water uses Wu Earth as its Executive, and Wu Earth's Fortune God is in Si. The Hour Pillar Jia Yin can "punish" out the Wu Earth hidden in Si, thus Gui obtains its Executive star. It is favorable to have Wealth or Mentor stars in the chart; encountering Wealth or Mentor Luck Cycles, or punishment, clash, meeting, or combination, are all good fortunes. If the Year and Month Pillars' stems and branches see Wu or Ji, the Executive or Warlord appears, reducing the pattern's quality. If the Luck Cycle or Annual Cycle encounters Wu, Ji, or Si to "fulfill" the Executive star, or if the fortune is exhausted, there may be danger. If the original chart already has Wu or Ji Earth, then the Hour Pillar Jia Yin is best placed in a "Void" state to weaken its power. However, if the Month Command itself is dominated by the Executive or Warlord, it is directly treated as an Executive or Warlord pattern, and this special pattern is no longer considered. For example, Gui Hai, Gui Mao, Gui Wei days, with the Earthly Branches already forming a Wood Bureau (strong Maverick), and the Hour Pillar encountering Jia Yin, if the Pillar also sees Wu, Ji, Si, or Wu, it constitutes a typical "Maverick sees Executive" situation, which does not enter this pattern; encountering it in the Luck Cycle or Annual Cycle will bring disaster. The principle of this pattern is similar to the "Flying Horse to Rank" pattern.

Since the Executive is obtained through "punishment," a "combination" is also needed to cooperate. If the chart has You or Chou to combine with the punished-out Si, it is good. Only avoid Shen, as Shen Metal will clash and restrain Yin Wood. Seeing Hai, Wu, or Xu is bondage; seeing Si is fulfillment; seeing Shen or Geng is clash or restraint — these are all signs of pattern breakage, making it difficult to achieve wealth and nobility. Another view holds that: "Six Gui days can also use the Geng Shen hour, using Shen to punish Si to obtain the Executive"; "Six Ji days can use the Ren Shen hour, punishing out the Jia Wood Executive from Yin"; "Six Xin days encountering the Geng Yin hour cannot form the punishment pattern. Because Xin uses Bing as its Executive, Bing's Fortune God is in Si, but the Hour Stem Geng Metal will injure the Jia Wood in Yin. Injured Jia Wood cannot punish Si, and Xin cannot obtain its Executive star, so it is not taken." The Ju Shan Pian mentions: "If the Punishment-Combination pattern is born in the Yin month (first month), it is directly treated as a Maverick pattern." It also says: "If the chart has You or Chou characters, those who encounter this pattern are often extraordinary heroes."

For example, Ming Dynasty Grand Secretary Gao Gong's chart: Ren Shen, Gui Chou, Gui Chou, Jia Yin. The chart contains Shen Metal, which is a pattern defect. When the Luck Cycle reached Geng Shen, and then encountered the Ren Shen Annual Cycle, the Shen Metal's power doubled, clashing and restraining Yin Wood, leading to his dismissal from office, barely escaping great disaster.

All the above patterns of remote combination, hidden punishment, flying clash, etc., originate from the 18 ancient patterns. Their application premise is that the original chart does not have apparent Wealth or Executive stars. In a person's destiny, if the Four Pillars' stems and branches have no obvious combination, but can invite, hide, arch, punish, clash, break, or restrain from other positions to "combine" official rank, it belongs to this type of pattern. If there is only "punishment" but no "combination," the noble energy cannot stay, and the pattern cannot be established.
