Follow Wealth Pattern (从财格): The Wealth Code of Going with the Flow
In the special patterns of BaZi fortune analysis, there is a category known as "Follow Patterns" (从格), whose core principle is "abandoning the self to follow." When the Day Master, representing the "self," is extremely weak, while another element's energy is exceptionally strong and forms absolute dominance, the Day Master must abandon its own nature and submit to this powerful force. The Follow Wealth Pattern is one such "Follow Pattern," specifically referring to a situation where the Day Master is too weak to stand, while the "Wealth Star" (the element the Day Master controls) gathers momentum and dominates the entire chart. The Day Master can only go along with the Wealth Star's strength. If this pattern is successfully formed, it often indicates that the native has an extraordinary sensitivity to wealth opportunities and possesses the potential to amass great riches, making it one of the recognized paths to great wealth.
How to Identify the Follow Wealth Pattern
The primary condition for this pattern is that the Day Master is extremely weak, receiving no support from the Mentor (印星, the element that generates the self) or the Peer/Rival (比劫, the same element as the self). The entire chart must be completely dominated by the Wealth Star. Either the chart is filled with Wealth Stars, or the Wealth Stars form a powerful alliance strengthened by the Talent or Maverick (食伤, the element that generates wealth), creating a specialized and dominant force that compels the Day Master to submit.
To more clearly judge the purity of the pattern, BaZi theory often divides it into "True Follow" and "False Follow":
-
True Follow Wealth Pattern:
- Day Master Has No Root: The Day Master's Heavenly Stem has no root (本气 or 余气) in the Earthly Branches (e.g., for a Jia Wood Day Master, there is no Yin, Mao, Hai, or Wei in the branches).
- Wealth Star Dominates: The Month Branch (the earthly branch of the birth month) is itself a Wealth Star, and the earthly branches combine to form a Wealth Bureau (e.g., for a Metal Day Master, the branches see Yin, Mao, and Chen forming a Wood Bureau), or the Wealth Stars are numerous and powerful throughout the chart.
- No Mentor or Peer/Rival: There should be no Mentor or Peer/Rival appearing in the Heavenly Stems or Earthly Branches, especially in the Heavenly Stems. If they appear, the pattern is broken.
- Talent, Maverick, Executive, and Warlord Are Not Taboo: If the chart contains Talent or Maverick to generate wealth, it means the wealth has a living source, making the pattern even better. If Executive or Warlord appears, they can protect the wealth from being seized, potentially leading to both wealth and status.
-
False Follow Wealth Pattern:
- Day Master Has a Tiny Root: The Day Master's Heavenly Stem has a very weak, almost negligible root in the Earthly Branches.
- Mentor or Peer/Rival Are Floating: Although a Mentor or Peer/Rival appears in the Heavenly Stems, they are weak, rootless, or are combined or restrained by other stems and branches.
- In this case, the Wealth Star's momentum still holds absolute dominance, but the pattern is not pure. It requires waiting for the Luck Cycle or Annual Cycle to remove those weak "diseased roots" (Mentor or Peer/Rival) to unlock the pattern's potential and attain fortune.
Tip: The distinction between "True" and "False" is not directly equivalent to good or bad fate. It describes the pattern's purity and the conditions required for achievement. A True Follow pattern is clear and often has a higher innate level. A False Follow pattern has slight flaws, and its success depends more on the cooperation and repair of later life cycles.
The Internal Logic of the Pattern
People born with the Follow Wealth Pattern are usually quick-thinking, decisive, and possess excellent business acumen and resource integration skills. Because the entire chart's energy is concentrated on "wealth under my control," their lives are deeply connected to money, material resources, and social networks. They can direct all surrounding forces toward the goal of creating wealth.
- If the pattern includes Talent or Maverick, it means the native can generate wealth through outstanding intelligence, creativity, or professional skills. This is the "generating wealth through skill or wisdom" type.
- If the pattern includes Executive or Warlord, it means wealth can bring status and power. The native may enter management through wealth or hold key positions in large enterprises or the financial sector, achieving a combination of "wealth" and "status."
However, the potential risk of this pattern lies in "following." The native completely submits to the wealth force, and their own foundation is unstable. If a Luck Cycle or Annual Cycle brings strong Mentor or Peer/Rival to support the Day Master, causing the Day Master to "no longer want to follow" or the wealth to be seized, the pattern will be broken. This is like a tall building losing its foundation, easily leading to major financial crises, career setbacks, or even legal disputes.
Favorable and Unfavorable Gods
-
Favorable Gods:
- Talent, Maverick: These are the source that generates the Wealth Star, injecting vitality and creativity into the pattern. This is called "wealth has a source." It indicates a quick-witted native who can further enhance the level of wealth and status.
- Earner, Venturer: When the Luck Cycle or Annual Cycle brings more Wealth Stars, it adds to the pattern's strength, accelerating wealth accumulation.
- Executive, Warlord: The Executive and Warlord can restrain the Peer/Rival that might break the pattern, acting as "wealth protectors." They also represent status, career, and authority, allowing the native to enjoy both wealth and honor.
-
Unfavorable Gods:
- Peer, Rival: These are the "number one enemy" that destroys the Follow Wealth Pattern, called the "pattern-breaking" god. They directly compete for and harm the Wealth Star, fundamentally opposing the pattern's strength, easily leading to financial loss, failed partnerships, family troubles, and other dangers.
- Mentor, Mystic: This is the second biggest taboo. The Mentor generates the weakened Day Master, giving it the idea of "self-reliance," thus rebelling against the pattern of "following the wealth force." This is also very inauspicious, often representing blocked thinking, lost support, and failed investments.
Ancient Wisdom, Modern View
"Three Lives Comprehensive Guide" (《三命通会》)
"The Lone Step" says: 'Abandoning the self to follow wealth requires meeting wealth. If you encounter a root, life is damaged without doubt.' For example, Ding born in the You month, with many Geng and Xin in the pillars, the Day Stem has no energy, so it must abandon itself and follow. Luck entering the north, the Wealth and Officer prosperous land, then it enters the pattern. Southward brings disaster. An ancient song says: 'The Day Stem has no energy, the chart is full of wealth. Abandoning the self to follow is the embryo of fortune. Luck prosperous in Wealth and Officer brings both wealth and status. If you encounter a root to help, it instead brings disaster.'
Modern Interpretation: "The Lone Step" points out that to form the Follow Wealth Pattern, the earthly branches must combine into a powerful Wealth Bureau. If the Day Master encounters its own root in a Luck Cycle (i.e., a cycle of Mentor or Peer/Rival), fate is inevitably damaged. For example, a Ding Fire Day Master born in the You month (Metal is strong), with many Geng and Xin Metal in the pillars, the Ding Fire Day Stem is weak and helpless, so it must abandon its own nature and follow the strength of Metal. When the Luck Cycle moves to the north (Water, the Officer/Warlord prosperous land) or the west (Metal, the Wealth prosperous land), it truly fits the pattern and unleashes its power. If it moves to the south (Fire, the Peer/Rival prosperous land), disaster will strike.
The ancient song puts it more directly: When the Day Master is weak and the chart is full of Wealth Stars, if you can completely abandon the self and follow the wealth force, it is actually the beginning of good fortune. Luck Cycles that reach prosperous Wealth or Officer lands can bring wealth and status. But if you encounter Mentor or Peer/Rival to support the Day Master, this "lifeline" instead brings disaster.
Case Study
- Fan Zhongyan, a famous Prime Minister of the Song Dynasty (according to the "Chronicle of Fan Wenzheng Gong"): Ji Chou, Gui You, Ding Chou, Xin Chou.
- The Day Master of this chart is Ding Fire, born in the You month, which is the season when the Wealth Star (Metal) is in command. The earthly branches show three Chou Earth and one You Metal, secretly forming a powerful "Si-You-Chou" Metal Bureau (Wealth Bureau). The Heavenly Stem also reveals Xin Metal, the Venturer, making the Wealth Star's energy overwhelmingly dominant. The Day Master, Ding Fire, has no strong root in the earthly branches. The Heavenly Stem Ji Earth, the Talent, drains the Day Master's energy to generate wealth, and Gui Water, the Warlord, also restrains the Day Master. There is no Wood (Mentor) or Fire (Peer/Rival) to support or help. Therefore, this is a classic True Follow Wealth Pattern. In this pattern, strong wealth generates the Warlord, so he could build achievements (the Warlord represents authority and merit) with his literary talent (the Talent represents creative output), eventually becoming Prime Minister. Throughout his life, the most unfavorable Luck Cycles would be those of Wood and Fire (Mentor and Peer/Rival prosperous lands). If encountered, the pattern would be broken, and his fortune would reverse.
