Clear Source, Turbid Flow (源清流浊): A BaZi Pattern of "High Start, Low Finish"

In BaZi (Chinese astrology), "Clear Source, Turbid Flow" (源清流浊) describes a special pattern that maps out a life trajectory. It vividly portrays fortune like a river: the source is clear and pure, but downstream it becomes muddy and polluted. This symbolizes a person whose early life is smooth and well-grounded, but whose middle and old age may decline into hardship and difficulty — a case of "having a beginning but no end."

How to Identify This Pattern

The core criterion for this pattern is a clear trend in the strength and foundation of the Useful God (用神) along the timeline — from the Year Pillar to the Hour Pillar, or from early Luck Cycles to later ones — shifting from strong and flourishing to weak and declining.

Specifically, it can be observed from two angles:

  • "Front Strong, Back Weak" in the Four Pillars: The favorable gods in the chart have their main strength concentrated in the Year and Month Pillars, which represent early life and foundation. They are in a state of seasonal strength or rooted power. However, in the Day and Hour Pillars, which represent the self and final outcome, the Earthly Branches are precisely in the "Death, Extinction, Illness, or Decline" stages of that Useful God, or are severely harmed by Punishments (刑), Clashes (冲), or Harms (害).
    • For example: If a chart uses Fire as its Useful God, and the person is born in the spring months of Yin (Tiger) or Mao (Rabbit), Fire is nourished by Wood, giving it a deep foundation in the Year and Month. But if the Day or Hour Branch is Hai (Pig) or Zi (Rat), which are Water and can overcome Fire, then this is the "turbid flow" location where the Useful God Fire is weak and dying.
  • "Rise First, Fall Later" in Luck Cycles: The Useful God in the natal chart may not be particularly strong. However, in the early Luck Cycles (roughly ages 1 to 40), the person walks through cycles that strongly support the Useful God. Thus, they achieve success early and everything goes smoothly. But entering middle and old age (after about 40), the Luck Cycles turn into periods that suppress the Useful God and favor the Unfavorable God (忌神). This causes a sharp downturn in fortune, and the glory days are gone.

Life Manifestation of This Pattern

People with this pattern often experience a life of great ups and downs, like a parabola with the peak at the beginning and the trough at the end. In early life, due to a superior family background, early display of talent, or favorable timing, they often achieve remarkable success and feel very proud. However, because of hidden flaws in the chart's foundation or poor luck in later years, all the favorable circumstances gradually fade as they age. After middle age, careers easily hit a plateau, wealth becomes hard to hold onto, and life circumstances slide from a peak to a plateau, eventually returning to mediocrity or even falling into hardship. The later years often carry a sense of loneliness and coldness. Therefore, people with this pattern especially need to prepare for danger in times of peace while their luck is still good, and make advance preparations for future challenges.

Favorable and Unfavorable Factors, and Remedies

This pattern itself indicates an imperfect fortune curve. The key to its favorability or unfavorability lies in whether the "turbid" part of the later luck can be remedied or resolved.

  • Favorable Situations (喜) :

    1. Salvation in Later Luck Cycles: Even if the later Luck Cycles are in the territory of the Unfavorable God, if the Heavenly Stem or Earthly Branch of that Luck Cycle can form a beneficial Combination (合) with the natal chart, or can generate another god in the chart that acts as a "rescuer," then there is still a turning point in the crisis, and it won't be a total loss.
    2. Auspicious Stars in Day or Hour Pillar: If the Day or Hour Pillar is in a declining location for the Useful God, but happens to be the position of auspicious stars like the Heavenly Noble (天乙贵人) or Heavenly and Monthly Virtue Nobles (天月二德), these can provide a buffer and support, reducing the difficulty of later life.
  • Unfavorable Situations (忌) :

    1. Complete Destruction of the Useful God's Foundation: This is the most dreaded situation for this pattern. If the only foundation of the Useful God in the Year and Month Pillars is severely damaged by Punishments or Clashes in the later Luck Cycles, it is like a tree being uprooted. This often foretells a cliff-like drop in life circumstances.
    2. Day or Hour Pillar as a Stronghold of the Unfavorable God: If the Day and Hour Pillars are not only the place of decline for the Useful God but also the strongest positions (like "Official" or "Emperor" stages) for the Unfavorable God, then the power of the "turbid flow" is doubled, indicating a potentially very bleak old age.
    3. Further Clashes in Later Luck Cycles: If the later Luck Cycles come to Clash with the already weakened Day or Hour Pillars, it adds insult to injury. This may mean more illness, disasters, and loneliness in old age.

Classical Text Discussion

From the "Three Lives Comprehensive Guide" (三命通会)

When the Useful God in the Heavenly Stems has energy in the Year and Month, is born and supported strongly, but the Day and Hour Pillars lead the Day Master or Useful God to a place of weakness, decline, death, or extinction; or when the early Luck Cycles are auspicious but the later cycles have no energy — this inevitably points to a lonely and poor old age. The "Ode" says: "The end is lonely and cold, as the Day and Hour commit to the place of decline and extinction." It also says: "When the Hour is weak but the Month is flourishing, there is a beginning but no end." And again: "When the Month is in a prosperous place, the later years are insufficient." A poem says: "When the Year and Month are born strong but the Day and Hour are withered, the fortune during the prime years must be extraordinary. But the children and grandchildren will have no support in old age, and in the middle to end of life, one becomes a starving beggar."

Modern Interpretation: This passage points out that if the Useful God on the Heavenly Stems has a root and energy in the Year and Month Pillars, is in a state of birth and strength, and is supported by other stems and branches; but the Day and Hour Pillars lead the Day Master or Useful God to a state of weakness, decline, death, or extinction; or if the early Luck Cycles are very good but the later ones have no vitality — all these situations destine the person to loneliness and poverty in old age. The poems in the ancient text emphasize that if the Month Pillar is strong but the Hour Pillar is weak, it is "having a beginning but no end." When the Year and Month are born strong but the Day and Hour are withered, the person may have extraordinary fortune during their middle-aged prime, but in old age, both they and their descendants may have nothing to rely on, and their circumstances become worrying.
